You are invited to a meeting hosted by the NSDA North Carolina Support Groups for people with spasmodic dysphonia and related voice conditions on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 10 AM Eastern Time.
This discussion will be focused on using positive humor to cope with spasmodic dysphonia. Jokes and clever conversation can make you feel closer to the people around you. As a result, laughter can fuel a part of the soul that distracts us from our problems. Good humor specifically can help to promote a lighter perspective and allow us an outlet when needed to boost our spirits.
Mary Bifaro, Leader of the Spasmodic Dysphonia Support Group of Charlotte, NC, and Rebecca Cole-Turner, Leader of the Greensboro, NC SD Support Group, will begin the meeting with introductions and group updates. Afterwards, discussion will open to the group to share stories about those with voice conditions and how using humor helps to navigate this new world and thrive.
Ninian Beall, our Durham, North Carolina Area Contact Person, is also going to play the banjo for the group for some light-hearted fun.
Meet others who understand the challenges of living with a voice disorder.
Share your experiences, find support, and discover new wellness strategies.
Friends and family are always welcome to join as well!

Join us for a special meeting with a viewing of the newly-released short film, Cookie.
This 15-minute film is about a young woman who after losing her voice to a debilitating vocal condition, fights to find it again to pursue her dream of acting. We are excited that the film’s creator and producer Shane Hartline (pictured right) will join us to discuss the film and answer questions. Shane has lived with spasmodic dysphonia since early childhood but it did not stop him from pursuing his goals of acting and now producing and directing. He said, “This is not only loosely my story but also the story of everyone who struggles with spasmodic dysphonia”. Shane hopes it will raise awareness about spasmodic dysphonia, the challenges it presents, and provides hope to those living with a voice condition.
The meeting is also the day before World Voice Day which is
celebrated every April 16th with the main goal of increasing public awareness throughout the world of the importance of the voice and
the impact of voice problems. The 2020 theme for World Voice Day is
ONE WORLD|MANY VOICE.
Learn more about Shane from these interviews on YouTube with the NSDA
that were released last year for World Voice Day.
