Helloooo Chicago!

My name is Kate Blaker, and I have been one of the NSDA Area Contact Leaders for the Chicago area. Recently, Cathy Jacobs who has served in the capacity of Support Group Leader for the Chicagoland area has passed the baton to me. Thank you, Cathy, for your many years of service to the NSDA community! We are so appreciative of all of your efforts. Cathy remains committed to supporting the group as we move forward!
 
I am interested in planning for, and “hosting” via Zoom, for now, regional gatherings for us that would include Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. My hope is for our regional group to provide a place where we can share stories and resources with one another, as well as welcome newly diagnosed people to our community. The NSDA welcomes anyone who identifies as having a voice disorder.

 

A little bit about me. My husband and I live in Highland Park with our two pups Stinson and Daley. Are there any other dog lovers out there? Future puppy playdate perhaps? We are a blended family and also share five human children, a couple of son-in-laws, and four pretty cute grandkids – our fifth is due any day! Pictured right is my husband and me with Daley at the 2020 Walk for Talk!
 
I was diagnosed with adductor type spasmodic dysphonia three years ago. As a result of my dystonia, I had to leave my 1st grade classroom. Fortunately for me, I had always thought that if I weren’t a teacher, I would have loved to have been a Clinical Mental Health Counselor. So onto graduate school I went! I have two years of study under my belt, and have just begun my internship with The Josselyn Center at their site in Waukegan. I hope to graduate in June. Fingers crossed! 
 
I notice there is a little something on the calendar called WALK FOR TALK! Are any of you planning on walking? I’m walking with my friends and family in Highwood, Illinois, on Saturday, October 9. You are welcome to join us! Highwood will be in the midst of their Pumpkin Festival and all the stores decorate their shops and the sidewalks with dressed up skeletons and pumpkins. It’s super fun, and family friendly.
