ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS
Dr. C. Blake Simpson is a Board-certified, fellowship-trained laryngologist. Dr. Edie R. Hapner is a Board-certified PhD Speech Language Pathologist/voice specialist. They serve as the co-directors of the UAB Voice Center and are nationally and internationally recognized for their clinical and surgical expertise, research, and teaching in disorders of voice, swallowing and airway with over 50 years of combined experience. The center is the only voice center in the state of Alabama and is recognized as one of the few truly interprofessional centers in the US.
Dr. Simpson received his medical degree from the University of Texas – Medical Branch at Galveston. He completed his post-doctoral training at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center, along with an Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and Laryngology and Care of the Professional Voice Fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His areas of interest include laryngology and voice disorders along with upper airway stenosis. He is the past president of the American Laryngological Association and serves on the Medical Advisory Board for Dysphonia International, formerly NSDA.
Dr. Edie R. Hapner is the George W. Barber, Jr., Foundation Professorship in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, Division Chief of Speech and Hearing -Department of Otolaryngology, and Co-Director of the UAB Voice Center. Her clinical and research interests include care of voice and upper airway disorders, aging voice, the role of voice therapy, laryngeal dystonia and essential voice tremor, Parkinson’s disease-associated voice disorders.
She earned her doctoral degree in speech and hearing science from Vanderbilt University. She is a Fellow of the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA), an Associate Fellow of the American Laryngological Association (ALA) and a Distinguished Fellow of the National Academy of Practice (NAP). This year she was awarded the American Laryngological Association Award given for career accomplishments in the area of voice despite being a non-MD.
Dr Hapner has published extensively on the treatment of voice disorders, and is an internationally recognized speaker in the area of voice and upper airway. She pioneered a new voice therapy treatment technique for aging voice that has been validated to improve the voice quality of life for those suffering with age related changes to the voice
Dr Hapner has been active in the National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association, now Dysphonia International, since its inception in 1989. She helped start or reinvigorate chapters in south Florida, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and now Alabama.
