It’s been awhile since we have had a chance to meet. I hope everyone has maintained their health and safety practices. I’m excited to announce that the NSDA Greater Detroit Support Group will have our next meeting on February 13th from 10:30 am ET (9:30 CT) via Zoom.
Of course those with spasmodic dysphonia, tremor, and family and friends are welcome. We are opening this zoom meeting to our neighboring states to include Wisconsin and Illinois.
Our speakers will be Dr. Adam Rubin, laryngologist and Juliana Codino, voice pathologist. Together, they make up the voice team at Lakeshore Professional Voice Center, Lakeshore Ear, Nose & Throat Center in St. Clair Shores, MI.
They will discuss diagnosis and treatment of spasmodic dysphonia (adductor, abductor, mixed) and tremor. They will discuss the pharmacology of Botox, its use in treatment, injection approaches, and also possible future directions of treatment such as the use of surgical implants and sodium oxybate. They will also discuss the team approach to patients with SD and tremor, and the role of voice therapy to maximize the effect of Botox and eliminate maladaptive compensatory behavior that can limit its efficacy.
Dr. Rubin and Ms. Codino treat numerous patients with spasmodic dysphonia and tremor, as well as other voice disorders, such as vocal fold masses and paralysis. They also have histories in the performing arts which make them more sensitive to and passionate about treating patients with voice problems. Every year they put on a World Voice Day Concert in which they and patients perform to raise vocal health awareness. We hope to be involved in future concerts! “We don’t yet see things clearly. We are squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won’t be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We’ll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing Him directly just as He knows us!”
