CELEBRATING 35 YEARS

REFLECTIONS FROM PRESIDENT CHARLIE REAVIS

Charlie ReavisAs we gather to celebrate the remarkable milestone of our 35th anniversary, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible journey we have undertaken together. From our humble beginnings as the National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association, thanks to our Founder, Dr. Daniel Truong, and Founding President, Larry Kolasa, we have grown into a global force dedicated to finding answers for spasmodic dysphonia and related voice conditions.

Over the years, our organization has evolved in response to the changing landscape of voice disorders and the diverse needs of our community. The decision to transition from the National Spasmodic Dysphonia Association to Dysphonia International was a significant change that symbolized our dedication to embracing a broader range of conditions. This transformation allowed us to reach a wider audience, providing support and resources to individuals facing various voice challenges.

The change in name also better reflects the expansion of our Mission. We have tirelessly worked to advance research, educate and raise awareness, and provide invaluable support to those affected by spasmodic dysphonia and related voice disorders. Looking forward, we remain committed to our Mission of creating a world where individuals with voice disorders can lead fulfilling and empowered lives without the challenges of a ‘broken voice’.

As we reflect on the past 35 years, let us take pride in the progress we have achieved together. Each milestone reached, every life touched, and all the challenges overcome have contributed to the legacy of Dysphonia International. Looking forward, we remain committed to our Mission of creating a world where individuals with voice disorders can lead full and empowered lives.

Together, let us continue to make a difference and strive for a future where the power of voice knows no boundaries.

In 2019, Founding Past President Larry Kolasa came to the office in Itasca, IL, and sat down with Executive Director Kimberly Kuman to talk about the organization’s founding, his journey with spasmodic dysphonia and his reflections over these many years. 2019 was a poignant year because it was not only the organization’s 30th anniversary but also Larry’s 80th birthday. Larry past away in 2022, but as we commemorate the 35th Anniversary, we remember Larry’s dedication.

WITH YOUR SUPPORT, WE CAN CONTINUE OUR MISSION TO FIND A CURE FOR SPASMODIC DYSPHONIA AND RELATED VOICE CONDITIONS

Finding Community
I found the Dysphonia International website and community almost three years ago, and it’s like someone opened up my brain and copied and pasted the feelings I’d felt into words for the first time. It was freeing to know so many others could relate, as I never knew anyone could. It’s been a tremendous help in my self-acceptance journey and navigating life with Dysphonia—it’s only now that I am beginning to advocate, so let’s see what else is in store!

Finding Answers
When I was first diagnosed in 2009 with ABSD, I went online looking for answers. I found the wonderfully supportive members of NSDA which is now Dysphonia International. I also gained a boatload of info from verified scientific studies, research and practical tips. And, I found the Atlanta SD support group. I’m deeply appreciative to all who make Dysphonia International innovative, supportive and extremely helpful for those of us who live with SD and other dystonias. Keep up the fight!

Finding International Connections
Since I discovered Dysphonia International during my research, I have met some wonderful people not only in the US but also in the UK who are suffering like me, and it has given me the impetus to raise awareness in this country. Thank you for all your support

Finding Gratitude
I am so grateful to all those who had the vision to create this wonderful organization and guide through the past 35 years. What an accomplishment! Many thanks!
