2020 NSDA Symposium Canceled

To our NSDA Community,

Like you, we have been closely monitoring the evolving situation of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak and its possible impact on hosting the upcoming NSDA Symposium on May 2, 2020, in Livonia, MI. The situation with the virus is quickly changing. There is no way to predict how it is going to unfold over the next several weeks.

Our annual Symposium often feels like a reunion. This meeting was going to be a special celebration of the 30th anniversary of the NSDA, but above all we have to put our commitment to the health, safety and well-being of our community. Therefore, the NSDA Board has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 NSDA Symposium. We believe this is in the best interest of all involved to limit anyone’s possible exposure to this virus.

We are not alone in this unprecedented choice to cancel as we see similar situations unfolding across the US and abroad. Individuals who had registered have already been contacted about refunds for their registrations.

We truly regret any inconveniences this may have caused. Our goal now is to have the 2021 Symposium in the Detroit area. We want to come together and celebrate the founding of the NSDA and all the work of this dedicated community. Dates will be announced soon so that you can plan early to be with us!

While it does not take the place of meeting in person, plans are in the works to host a virtual symposium on Saturday, May 2, 2020, so you don’t have to miss out on any updates! This will be free and open to anyone who wants to join. The presentations will be recorded and available to watch at a later date too. These challenges push us to be creative and we may even try for an online Welcome Party!

In these uncertain times, we are so grateful for your continued support. We hope you understand our decision. If you have any questions, please feel free to email NSDA Executive Director Kimberly Kuman.

Most importantly, stay safe and take care of you and your family. We will get through this together.
