I have recently been diagnosed with abductor spasmodic dysphonia. I am a 911 dispatcher and am scheduled for botox injections in February. I am concerned that I may never be able to do my job again and several people tell me I should retire on disability, I'm only in my mid-20's. Does anybody have a job like mine and still perform their duties? |

My job requires significant telephone use. And, like you, I have AB. I do not use botox, but learned an alternative phonation technique - some people refer to this as reprogramming the speech mechanism. My voice is not perfect and I usually use an amplifier on my phone to avoid straining (for me and the listener), but I am easily understandable. My suggestion is that, while you may find it necessary to take some time off from your current duties, you postpone decisions until you learn more about what level of capability you will have. Severity of SD is quite varied as is the effectiveness of botox and other treatment forms. Then, you can plan your course of action when you have more knowledge of what jobs you can perform successfully. All the best,
