Does anyone know how/where I can obtain statistics i.e, number of surgeries performed; ratio of success; complications etc. Is there some sort of data base? I have been scheduled for surgery March 3, but have very little (vague) information regarding the surgery's track record. My surgeon has performed (or assisted) DeRe surgery 9 times; 8 successfully. I would love to hear from anyone who has either has the surgery, or can offer any input. Many thanks!

Nancy, I had the SLAD surgery at UCLA by Dr. Berke in Jan. 2001. It was very successful and I had no problems. Dr. Berke has been doing this surgery for years and most cases seem to be successful. There are a couple of men on this BB who did not have good results If you do a search on this BB, you will find a great deal of info about the SLAD surgery.

Some days my voice is not quite as strong as others but I am well pleased with it. I believe I could work again with this new voice but I am retired and spend my time helping people with SD and doing other things that I did not have time for while I was working. I will be happy to answer your personal e-mail if you have questions.

Lib Haywood, Charlotte, NC AD/SD Southeast Regional Coordinator of NSDA

I had the SLAD surgery 9/00 and haven't got my full voice back yet. There are 3-4 men that I know of that have had similar experiances. I can speak in a loud whisper. Dr. Berke said I have a bad case of acid reflux and when I get that under control my voice should return. Well it has been over 2 years and I have altered my diet and taken "the little purple pill" and I see no change. I am currently seeking a second opnion from another top doctor that treats SD patients.

Steve

Nancy -

This surgery is not without significant risks. It does seem to be much more successful for women than men. I have "heard" of one woman who did not enjoy a successful outcome. There are 3 men who regularly post on this bbs who had disappointing outcomes. I am one of them as is Steve who already posted to your message. There are others but most have gone elsewhere and do not post here. The risk is that you will not get a voice back. Jeff - who's posts you can find on the bbs - can only whisper. I have a very low voice, just slightly louder than a whisper. My "voice" is being made by other structures trying to vibrate to do what my vocal cords won't do. So, there are significant risks that you should ask your doctor about. Best of luck. John

Sincere thanks to everyone who responded to my post. I am new to the bb and am overwhelmed with the encouragement, support, and wealth of information I have received. I really appreciate you sharing your experiences, both good and bad. My heart goes out to all those who had unsuccessful surgeries, and I pray that a remedy isn't too far off. You are all amazing!

Nancy
