Trouble with dentists?

I've got a dentist appt. in about an hour and a half, and I've found myself worrying over whether there are going to be any problems choking wise, 'cause I suddenly realized that the last time I was there (in 2000) I wasn't having that problem yet. At least not in terms of spasms...(I was having other motor planning related problems with the whole chewing, swallowing, breathing, situation, but of course, that wasn't affected in dentist type situations.)

I don't quite know what to do or how to explain it in that context if it does happen. ACK! (though I'd know how to explain it if it happened in the doctor's office, ... ) ... I should've really posted this earlier, but was preoccupied with other things.... and I think my brain's mostly in neutral as it is.... And it's not as if I don't have enough to deal with with this dentist situation, even if this particular dentist/group of dentists is quite well experiences with autistics.... it's still kind of an AACK! situation, and one MORE thing...especially which they DON'T know about, and not having an official diagnosis (though I do have one doctor who is convinced) it's not something I want to discuss with ANYONE in the healthcare profession if I don't have to....

I guess we'll just wing it and see how it goes, but I'd like to know anyways if other people have trouble with dental care because of their SD or if I'm worrying about this for nothing so that next time I know whether I should worry or not.

Kim

Well, THAT was a bust! My support person never showed up! we still dont' know where she is! so anyways, now ther's no time crunch, but it's kinda more important to hear from others now 'cause we might manage to get it rescheduled for next week if some sort of miracle occurs.

Kim I think your question is a very valid one. I too choke easily.

One thing I've learned is to make sure that the dentist doesn't put that chair back into a 'total' reclining position while he/she is working in your mouth. I always ask that I'm tilted up some. This has helped me greatly.

Good luck.

Anne

Yeah, found this out today. That was what totally trashed the whole encounter. It was pretty overwhelming before that, and I didn't know if I'd be able to deal with it, but then she put the chair back, (btw. she must've just graduated, and was completely CLUELESS about disabilities!! ACK! I'm never going to one I don't know again!!!) and I got that "I'm going to choke" sensation so I sat up again right away, and after a few seconds or so, tried it again to the same result, so sat upagain, and then continued into a bolt off the chair and into the corner ... it was all I could take, and I knew it would never work. I think it freaked the dentist out, though I don't really know,I wasn't really hearing by that point (and I was already too overwhelmed by the unusual level of loudness anyways) I heard some discussion, and then it was just my support person and me and then the dentist came back and rambled, and proved she didn't have a clue.

I'm going to have to deal with the one I already know (the other one I dealt with moved apparently) and his waiting list is always a mile long -November now... and depending on when in November, I could be up to my eyeballs in school stuff... AACK! and the whole thing was that there's a couple that hurt.

the other stupid thing was that some idiot got it confused and only booked an evaluation when they were SUPPOSED to book time to actually DO something to FIX them!! That was the whole point!! So on top of verything else, this REALLY was a disaster!!! ANd now I'm in pain because they were prodding around a tooth that hurt, and they stretched my mouth all out of shape, when the corners are already cracked, and they're usually better about dealing with that too!! AARGH!!

ranting.... I guess we're definitely going to have to do something about arranging things better next time... make sure they are aware of the choking hazard and everything....

Kim, fried, and upset.

Kim,

I did have some problems at the dentist but I had prepared

him prior to working on my teeth. Therefore he told me to just motion if I needed to stop b/c of the choking. I did need to stop a couple of times but the dentist was very understanding. Good luck.

Mary
