I'm so glad that I found a site and be able to talk to other people with the same condition as me. I don't know how this happened. I don't know if it's from the stress of my move from Connecticut to Florida. The stress from my job. Or the allergies that I have. I just don't know

About a few months ago, I was diagnosed with a mild SD. At first my doctor thought it was allergies. I was sent to an allergist and found out that I have all sorts of allergies and I'm currently receiving allergy shots once a week. The allergist said that the hoarness that I was experiencing was caused by the post-nasal drip and it should clear up soon. They've given me nose sprays and allergy medications to clear up the problem. I've never heard of SD until I found Dr. Morton Cooper's website and talked to him to realize that my condition was permanent and basically untreatable.

I am currently seeing and ENT and he discovered that I have a mild form of SD. He has sent me to voice therapy, after 6 visits, the insurance company told me that's it for now. My doctor and therapist say that I need more treatment and I'm going to appeal the insurance company's decision and hopefully go back to voice therapy soon. I have made progress and have improved my voice from 6 months ago.

I have finally come to terms with the way my voice sounds and when people ask me "are you sick?". I just say, I have a voice problem and they reply, oh I'm sorry. Because before that I would just say no and end the conversation. I have good days and bad days. I'm still not sure about the botox shots yet. I'm not sure if there are many doctors in my area that do it.

I hope I can learn a lot about this site.

Kim, I'm glad you found this bb too. There's is a lot of knowlege and experience shared here, and a ton of support! Many ENT's are unfamiliar with SD. It is a neurological disorder not caused by anything you did or did not do. Voice therapy for some of us has helped us cope but it doesn't cure the problem. Botox is helpful to many. I just had my first Botox injection on Monday and it is working.

You will find a lot more information and a list of doctors all over the country that treat SD at the NSDA website at www.dysphonia.org/nsda/

Take care,

Vici ABSD w/tremor--Illinois
