Well I have sort of been diagnosed with SD and have been reluctant to beleive that what I am feeling is muscles in my throat spasming. I am starting to accept it more as time goes by. However, I still cannot seem to get over the feeling that I get in my throat and chest that it is blocked with something. Yes I have had xrays, ultrasounds, swallowing tests etc. But when the feeling is a happening, it is so uncomfortable.

I was reading some of the emails on the bulletin board and certainly have the symptoms of loosing my voice, especially when I am talking on the phone. Although, I have other symptoms that I have not heard anyone talk about with respect to SD. I cough so much, I burp, but it really is not a burp. Has anyone else ever had these symptoms?

After reading the emails on the bulletin board, I am almost worried that this is going to get worse than it is. It is pretty bad when it is happening, but I still have sometimes a couple of days at a time where I do not have any symptoms. Most of the time I have my normal voice and the only symptom I have is a very uncomfortable feeling in the throat and chest. I work in an office with clients in person and on the phone all day. Up to now I have been able to deal with this condition. But I sure hope it does not escalate. Is SD something that can completely go away on its own for some people?

I am very physically active and find that my symptoms disappear during vigorous physical activity. But they usually return with an hour or two after.

Hi Shirley, and welcome to the BB. I was a secretary in a busy office for years and before that, a telephone operator, so I used my voice alot. When my SD first began about 8 years ago, I sounded as though I had a cold and like you I coughed alot. At that time I was a smoker so contributed that to my problem, however, I didn't quit smoking until 4 years ago and I still have the cough. I also have a very uncomfortable feeling in my chest. My SD has worstened but I get relief most of the time from Botox injections which makes my voice just about normal again for about 3 months. It sounds as though you have not reached the point of needing Botox, however, that would be entirely up to you. I know how difficult it is to work in a busy office on the phone and dealing with clients and other people can be. Best of luck to you and keep checking in with us. This it the place to come if you are looking for answers to your questions and lots of support from others who are in the same boat.

Hi Doris, I just wanted to say thanks for the welcome. It is really nice to talk to someone who is experiencing what I experience. Yes you are right, I am not ready for Botox quite yet. I still have not seen the neurologist to confirm my diagnosis and of course, I am still able to function normally most of the time.

Only time will tell what will happen.

Hi Shirley -

This is my first time on this BB, too, but I was diagnosed finally with SD about a year ago and have gotten Botox shots every few months since then. I didn't have the cough or chest feeling, but the tightness in my throat was there. I work in customer service on the phones all day and that has been very tough. I certainly hope your condition doesn't get worse. Mine came on somewhat gradually over a couple years until I go sick, had laryngitis, and my voice came back with spasms and a strangled sound. It took awhile before I was diagnosed accurately but Botox has helped me.

I wonder if you are in an early stage of SD where it's possible it could worsen (not to scare you here) but if any speech therapy, breathing techniques, etc would help to lessen the symptoms. I don't know - just thinking out loud. But it's good you're aleady aware of the illness and of this BB. There does seem to be a lot of info.

Hope things stay fairly well.

Bill
