Yesterday I had a Scope done, after 2 years of not visiting my ENT. My voice seems to have gotten worse since this Spring, and I was determined to find out what was happening down there... The Scope showed very little of my vocal cords. They looked teeny, barely visible. The ENT said she thought my compensatory muscles, used all this time to help compensate for my AB SD, have over-compensated! She also thought my new tremor was caused by them. The muscles surrounding my cords looked like they tried to swallow up my poor cords, in an effort to speak. The doc said my cords are still the same size, just hidden by the overworked compensatory muscles. As an experiment, she gave me an ADductor style injection, only 1 unit each side. Hopefully it will get those compensatory muscles to loosen their grip, and my speech will improve. Now for the Questions: Anyone else have problems with their compensatory muscles?

I have always had my injections of Botox directly into my one good vocal cord. I am curious about the injections into the muscles. Is this a new/different procedure? |

Karen, The botox is actually injected into the muscles that control the action of the vocal cords. In the case of ADductor SD the botox is injected into one or both Thyroarytenoid (TA) muscles and in the case of ABductor into the Posterior Cricorytenoid (PCA) muscle. See Dr. James Thomas's web site for further details.(link below) Lloyd Pearson(BC) Canada AD/SD Related link: http://www.voicedoctor.net/therapy/dystonia.html |
