Tried searching the BB on deviated septums, but came up empty. I recently visited my ENT and he commented on how bad of a deviated septum I have. I believe that this condition has worsened over the past 2 -3 years which happens to coincide with my SD starting. Got me thinking that could a deviated septum be the trigger (not cause) of when my SD started. My breathing changed which impact how I breath during speach. Until we know more about how SD gets triggered, it could be a reason to have a deviated septum corrected for family members that have SD in their family. Could be way off based, but thought I would through it out for discussion. Also, considering getting my deviated septum fixed as it seems to cause more nasal congestion than normal for me. Anyone been through this procedure? What kind of pain, recovery time, and success have people had? John

Just over a year ago an ENT I was seeing for my raspy, hoarse voice, suggested I have surgery for a deviated septum, and he started treating me for acid reflux which he said caused the voice problems. I got a second and third opinion about the surgery, and both said it probably woundn't change my breathing pattern (of breathing through the mouth since I had been breathing that way for 50 some years), so I didn't give anymore thought to it. My ADSD started around November, so now, after your post, I'm wondering if having the surgery might have made a difference. Still not sure what triggered my SD, but I have the above mentioned items, and have also taken inhalent drugs for years to keep my asthma under control. Probably some connection with the reflux, asthma, and improper breathing techniques, but haven't broken the code on it yet! |

I once had a ENT mention to me about a deviated septum. He didn't seem to think that surgery was necessary in my case. I am always trying to find a connection with something, that might have caused my voice problem. I have had Acid Reflux or (GERD) most of my life, but until I started having problems with food getting stuck in my esophogus, I never took any medication. My younger Brother was having the same problem with Acid Reflux and the food thing and went to a Doctor who prescribed Prilosec. I went to my Family Doctor and asked him about it and he put me on it too. That was about seven years ago. At that same time I went to see a Gastriologist who suggested I have Endoscopy to open up my esophogus. I had this procedure twice within two years and I would say it has pretty much allieviated my swallowing problem. I always wondered if this procedure had anything to do with my voice problem?? I have always used nasal sprays myself, because of constant nasal congestion. I also have post nasal drip. I asked the Gastriologist what he thought was causing my voice problem since it started during that time frame. He thought it was from a combination of both Acid Reflux and the nasal drip. I was getting it from both ends so to speak. I wish I could put a finger on it. It is probably a combination of all these things that is causing my problem. I just wish I knew what I could do about it??? Larry/MTD SoCal |

Larry, Your message got my attention, b/c I too had an endoscopy about three years ago (I was just diagnosed with ad/sd this month, but have had symptoms for more than a year). My husband suggested that maybe this procedure triggered the problems with my voice, but I didn't really think anything of it since no one really knows what causes SD. Reading your post made me think though, who knows? I also am taking medication for acid reflux, and have dealt with nasal problems most of my life due to allergies. Jenni, AD/SD, Indy |

I seem to be the "queen of surgery" on this particular topic. In '85 I had major sinus surgery for a deviated septum. I had previously gotten myself addicted to OTC nasal spray due to allergies and asthma. It was the best thing I did for my allergies and asthma, but I looked like I'd been hit by a truck with black eyes after the surgery. No S.D. symptoms at that point until a car wreck 11 years later, lots of airbag trauma to chest and neck and arms, whiplash stuff. I could breath air in, but had a hard time breathing air out initially. That, of course, put the docs on the asthma trail related to the gun powder in the airbag...so they added more inhalers...helping some. Eventually, two years later, then I was on the road to G.I. docs. Prior to the surgery, they had me take a year of meds and two endoscopes, Ph 24 hour test, barrium swallows, etc., and it showed I had "mild-mod" reflux, putting me on the line for surgery. Well, I absolutely couldn't take the choking and coughing fits, hoarse, sore throat chronically...(despite doing everything asked of me). So, I had an esophageal wrap/stomach surgery to prevent reflux and it helped greatly!!! I don't have to take any reflux meds at all now, or prop up the head of the be! Alas, still have S.D., but not as bad...so now Botox/vocal therapy is helping, though dosages are still being worked on. My doctors still have me on asthma inhalers and also Nasacort to prevent the post nasal from allergies. All that effects those poor vocal chords in many ways, so I gargle and also drink lots of water.... I wonder how much stomach acid was getting into my throat post car accident, as the surgery for GERD was not done until three years later. (Everyone knows the doctor hopping involved in getting an S.D. dx!) -Sherry/AD/Denver |
