Inconsistent injections

I was diagnosed with AD/SD about four years ago, and started receiving botox shots two years ago. I just got my fifth shot about a week and a half ago, and it's the 2nd shot this year that hasn't worked. No breathy period, no improvement, nothing. My first bad shot back in January only worked for about a month. I'm really starting to get frustrated about the inconsistency of the shots. Like most of you, I plan the shots so that I will have my voice for particularly important events coming up.

I'm considering trying a different doctor. I'm just wondering if some doctors are "better" at this than others. Is it the doctor, or is it the nature of the shot to be inconsistent?

I live in the Seattle area and would be interested in recommendations for the best botox shot doctor around. Also, if anyone has experience with botox shots and performing in theatre, let me know. Thanks!

Hi Juli

I have SD and do quite a lot of theater. I have had AD/SD for 25 years. It went undiagnosed for 11 years and then treated with Botox for 10 years. During those 10 I scheduled the Botox shots around plays.

The results from my shots were fairly consistant. I did have 4-5 that didn't take. I came to the consclusion that I had done a lot of talking right after receiving those injections and that may have been the reason that they didn't take. I started resting my voice after the injections for at least 4-5 hours. That seemed to work until 3 years ago when the Botox quit working. After 3 years of no positive results from the injections my doctor gave me a much larger dose the last time and it worked somewhat.

I am still doing some theater but have to limit

my parts to ones where the quality of my voice isn't important. Right now I am in a play where I portray a 80 yr old woman with Altheimer's so my voice doesn't have to be good. I find my voice is better on stage than off. I guess it is because I am projecting.

Hope this holds some information for you.

Ida

AD/SD Iowa

Hi Julie, I know that it is very frustrating to look forward to having an injection and then find it doesn't work. That happened to me 2 weeks ago. I was looking forward to my high school reunion this month and actually postponed my injection so that I would have good voice. Well, it didn't happen!! My doctor is new and had a terrible time finding a signal with the EMG machine. I found out later after looking in the mirror that his injection sight was much higher than I normally have. My neck was also bruised, swollen and sore. I really dread looking for another doctor. I too feel like finding the best doctor in the states and just going to him every 3 months or so. The NSDA has a list of doctors in different states. Actually there is a web site. Look up NSDA: Healthcare Referral. You may find a doctor with more experience on the list.

Good luck to you!

Julie, I've been receiving bo-tox injections for 5 years after being diagnosed with spasmadic dysphonia. I have significant "pitch breaks" and "breathiness" in my speach. I've typicall received only two injections (2 muscles) at a time both at 250. I was having less than favorable results for the last few injections so in mid July, they decided to inject all 4 muscles, 2 at 250 and two at 350. It's now 9 weeks since the injections and I still have only a whisper of a voice and significant breathiness and breaks. It has been an absolute nightmare. My life and my career have come to a grinding hault as a result. I have no ability to communicate with my voice. I'm a very healthy 37 yr old white male. I'm doing all I can to research some for of permanent surgery to finally fix this problem. I'm in Atlanta, GA at Emory hospital and they've indicated there is a surgeon at UCLA, but they recomend against it. I'm considering a trip to Vanderbilt hospital in Nashville, TN. I'm going back to Emory tomorrow for another consultation on what went bad with this shot. I will keep you posted as this has been a living nightmare for 9 weeks. hang in there.

greg.

Yeah--some doctors are definately better at this than other doctors, but the nature of the botox shots are that they are very inconsistent, also. I would give your doctor a few shots at it before changing doctors, but if the shots don't work after three or four shots, I would consider switching docs. You have to use your own judgement about this. It is a very subjective thing.

Julie,

I just recently had a shot that didn't take on one side. I've had this problem about 5 times in 7 years.. very frustrating but I always say, at least there is some sort of treatment thank goodness. I'm scheduled to go back for another injection in a week to correct the "missed" shot. In the past few times this has happened I've had to go back the next month and it proved to resolve the problem. I wish like everyone else it was more of a black and white treatment but it does seem to be a tad on the "grey" area side at times with a good injection. I've been pretty happy with my doctor so far but am anxiously looking for a permanent cure that is a proven and safe procedure at the same time. Lets cross our fingers.
