I have been dealing with SD since 1996. I am a 50 year old single man that is otherwise healthy. I had Selective Nerve Deinnervation by Dr. Berke of UCL 9/2000. I have never recovered from the surgery. I am breathy and my local KC doctors said that my vocal cords were not coming together completely so I had coligene injections 9/5. Now he says the breathing tube that was installed for the proceedure irritated my throat and it would take a couple of weeks to heal. I called UCLA to consult and they said I should stop talking for 4 weeks!! What does one do not to issolate them selves if you don't talk!! I am feeling very isolated and depressed. Not suicidal!!

Steve,

Sorry to hear about your situation. Wow, 4 weeks of not talking! I tried to not talk for a day, and it was incredibly hard. Will you be able to work? I appreciate the support you gave me several months ago, and hope you will let me know if there is anything I can do to help. (If you need phone calls made, you can email me, and I'll make the call. I don't sound great, but people can generally understand me anyway.) I continue to try various things for my AD/SD. Currently doing acupuncture and reading Arthur Leesac's book on the voice, so that I can work on breathing and relaxation. Good luck, and I hope that someone had suggestions for you other that not talking for 4 weeks. I am so thankful for the Internet and Email! Pat

Steve, I am very sorry to hear about your problems. It appears from other postings on this BB that men have more problems recovering from the operation than women. I can understand your feeling of isolation but keep in touch with all of us on the BB and keep us posted on your progress. Our prayers and best wishes are with you as you go through recovery. I have a friend who has coligene injections and the injections do not last very long. She has to keep repeating them. She has not had the operation. Can Dr. Berke help?
