For years I've paid for long term disability insurance, and never thought I would ever use it. At the same time, it's been a secure feeling knowing it's there just in case.

With my recent diagnosis of SD and the negative impacts on my career (as an educator), I'm considering applying for long term disability, but wonder if the insurance company will actually come through....and what I would have to do if they said "no way."

It seems that insurance companies always do what is financially in their best interest first and foremost, and show little regard for the individual. Almost anyone who has had to deal w/insurance companies can recite horror stories of a "read the fine print" scenario.

So, the question is, has anyone had any success w/collecting private insurance long term disability.....and what are your experiences?

Thanks!

I was able to collect LTD for 5 years. Half way through the fourth

year I was asked if I would be willing to participate in a career counselling program but really I didn't have a choice because they said that if I didn't they would stop my payments. We came to a mutual agreement on what I thought I might enjoy doing that didn't require

a lot of voicing. I did a one year program while still collecting

benefits. This was followed by a 3 month job search period and then

they terminated my benefits. I've since spoken to a few lawyers

that have told me that "group policies" are really bad and that one

practically has to be on their death bed to collect for longer than

that. Their retraining obligations are very broad.... they can retrain

a professional to sort toothpicks and in their view they've met their

obligation.

It's not likely the insurance company will flat out say no. You're

an educator and you need a voice to do your job. I was a flight

attendant and there was no way I could do my job without my voice.

My sister was wiser than I .... when she became a dental hygienist

at the young age of 21 she bought private insurance and had her

policy constructed to cover all her needs. She paid through the teeth

to carry this policy ($280.00 per month) but her income is guranteed

for life if she's ever disabled from working as a hygienist.

Good luck with whatever choice you make. It's extremely tiring fighting

big insurance companies but it's also extremely tiring trying to work without a voice.

All the best,

Cynthia AB
