I am getting Botox - I am scared

I had a recent visit with a wonderful Speech Pathologist..and I will be getting Botox on July 9 in Dayton, OH. I am happy but nervous because I heard that it can be painful and choking on needles and all of that has got me wondering if it is worth it.

Krissie..I followed your advice and recorded my voice during a presentation I had to give. I was able to let the Pathologist here my voice as it is normally and not the clarity I have when I am speaking to the doctors.

Well Wish me luck and keep me in your prayers, as I will be alone when I get the botox and I am sure very afraid.

Dedra, I will keep you in my prayers. I wanted to let you know that my Botox procedure was pretty easy. It only took like 5 minutes or so. During the next couple of weeks, practice relaxing and focusing. You'll find that this will really help you when you get the shots.

You will do great, I just know it!!!

Dedra, I can relate. I was by myself two weeks ago when I
had my first botox. Mine took longer b/c it was a peroral shot.
I brought a small cassette player with me and listened to some relaxing music and that realy helped! Good luck.

Hi Dedra..............will be thinking of you on the 9th and good luck.
I went to the hospital again today to the Facial Unit and was really struggling in the shops before hand with my voice.
Soon as I got in the Consulting room.........clear voice and I was not even seeing anyone that is dealing with the voice problem.........why is this??????????????

Hi Krissie
I know what you mean. Isn't that the weirdest thing? My SD went undiagnosed for 10 years, and during that time I did a lot of theater. My voice was strong on stage but I couldn't talk back stage. I had been told it was emotional, and I felt this proved it. It seems like when I am a little scared or excited my voice somehow kicks in.
My husband was mad because I could talk to the dogs, but not to him.

Hi Dedra
I had Botox shots for 10 years and for the most part they were not that uncomfortable. The difference in the way you will be able to talk is worth any discomfort. Botox doesn't work for me anymore.
Don't talk for a couple of hours after the shot and be careful drinking water. A straw helps.

Dedra

I have had two Botox shots now and they have been a breeze. My Dr. did just one side the first time and I had a voice with in two days, but it only lasted for six weeks and then started to go. The second I had on May 31 and my voice is getting better every day. This was given on both sides and a wee more Botox to boot. My Dr. said she thought I had the whitest knuckles she had ever seen, and I really didn't need to stop the blood flowing in my hands.....LOL. It is all worth it, the strain of talking with out having the shot is just to much to handle for me. So I will take bloodless hands and being scared any time. Go for it, it will be just fine.

One of my friends said "just pretend that the shot you get will fix all your facial dips along with your voice and just march in there and say do it to me!!!!" :~)

Dedra, I'm sure you will have lots of us thinking about you and saying a prayer for you when you have your first Botox. As I've posted fairly recently, I have now had 2 shots, one on each side, different doses each time. I consciously relaxed myself, said a prayer of thanks for the availability of treatment, and didn't expect too much in the way of results (especially since I'm AB). I'm sure the level of discomfort in the actual injections depends on (a) one's own neck/throat/larynx physiology, (b) the level of experience of the physician, (c) the specific injection method, and (d) who knows what else. I'll hope for you the same truly-no-big-deal experience I have had both times, in terms of the injection itself (my dr should give lessons to other drs on how to do it! he's on the faculty of Hopkins Med School, so it's a comfort to know that he does teach new doctors).
Go forward in hope and optimism!

hi,
i have had 3 injections since last december and i understand that you are scared. as far as the choking my doctor gives me a medicine in my throat that helps with the choking and coughing. i have been scared everytime i go in but i feel it is worth it. in case no one has told you, you might have trouble swallowing for a couple of days but that will pass. i am not going to lie to you and say it does not hurt because it does but the best thing to do is try to relax.
thanks for listening
kathy

Hi Dedra,

I am new to this BB and I too had my first Botox shot on July 9. I have had absolutely no reaction to the shot. I'm curious if you have had a reaction yet...breathiness, huskiness, difficulty swallowing, etc. I have had none of this and my voice is the same as always. I'm very disappointed, but will try Botox again. Hope your shot was successful!

Karol

Hi Dedra.....good luck and I wish I were in your shoes...........my fight for Botox continues.
I always clutch a tissue in my hand when the Meds are doing nasties to me........seems to help.
I had some pretty awful tests done recently that I agreed to being filmed...my claim to fame......for training purposes.
Had my tissue in my hand though..all the time.
Hugs Krissie

Dedra,

I have AD type. I just got back from vacation today and still no change with my voice. Very disappointing since I was on vacation all of last week and was very excited about the thought of going back to work with a new voice! Oh well...guess I'll have to wait for that. I'll go back to work tomorrow with the same old voice - being on vacation helps me to realize how stressful it is for me to go to work and worry about how my voice will sound. I've worked for the same company for 12 years, so everyone is used to me, but it's still stressful for me. Last week my husband said my voice sounded pretty good, but I think it was because of the low stress with not working. I still had spasms, so I don't think the Botox had anything to do with my voice being fairly good last week.
