Other Symptoms??

Does anyone else feel that post nasal drip and mucous in the throat is as much of the problem as the dystonia?

I was diagnosed as AD/SD 7 years ago but have felt the whole time that if I could just clear up the mucous in my throat, my voice quality would greatly improve.

I'd love to hear from anyone! (Last time I posted, I couldn't get any responses!!)

Matt, last time you asked about this you did get a response.

Your post at

http://www.dystonia-bb.org/forums/sd/posts/8356.html

had about 9 responses before the thread died off.

In my case the answer is "No, I don't".

I do have allergic rhinitis (hayfever) but in my opinion it is not related to my SD.

Hi Matt, I have severe post nasal drip and have spent the last 42 months saying that my throat is sore because of the continual clearing of the mucus etc not because I have, as was the general opinion, reflux.
I have just had a 24hour PH test which was unremarkable so looks like I was right.
My dentist took some x-rays last week and has made an appointment for me at our Facial Unit as she was concerned by the position of the sinus nerve.
Hopefully something will be done now.
My doctor said that they do not do referrals for sinus problems so who knows.
Anything that aggravates the throat is bad for SD.
There was a thread on this a while ago and it did seem that it was a problem common amoungst SDers.

Krissie,

Thanks for the response.

I'd be real interested in hearing about the positioning of the sinus nerve. By the way, I was just over in London. Just a short visit though, I only spent 1 1/2 days there. I spent the better part of a week in Nice, France and had a connecting flight through London. One of these days I'll be back. London's a great town, from what I had time to see!

Coincidentally, I just got that hose out of my nose this morning. Yes, I to got to experience, again, the sheer joy of the 24 hr ph test. I had anti-reflux surgery done back in 1998, so the reason for the test was to determine the success of that surgery - so that once and for all, I can rule out reflux as a factor. I'll let you know the result, but my gut tells me that reflux is not part of the problem.

My ENT thinks that allergies may be playing a part. So, for the last two years, I've gone to an allergist. He tells me that I have a lot of Candida in my gut, which can be a triggering agent to having allergies. I've actually been on a very strict diet and a drug called Sporanox, on and off, for several years now - but I'm having a hell of a time getting rid of the Candida!!

Anyway, I mention this since I'm curious if anyone else, who tends to have mucous problems, has also been told that they have Candida?

Somethings causing all that junk in the throat and I'm driving myself crazy trying to figure it out!

Matt---I have the SAME exact thing and have tried to resolve the
mucous and the postnasal drip through allergy shots, sprays, allergy
medications, etc. I have even had the allergist tell me that all the
mucous sitting on my larynx HAS to affect the quality of one's
voice. I too feel that if I could resolve the post nasal drip that
my voice would improve. Keep us informed if you find anything that
works.....Susan AD/SD

Matt: I was recently diagnosed with SD. Several months before the diagnosis, I had enough of the allergy/mucous/drainage/constant sore throat problems. A friend loaned me a book, "Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type". It stated that dairy products caused a lot of mucous. I cut out everything relating to dairy, switched to soy milk, cheese, etc., and it has greatly helped. My allergies are not as bad and throat is a lot clearer. I hope this helps. Best Wishes. Rena, I just bought and read Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type a few months ago. Interestly, I've already been on a diet for Candida, that is basically identical to what is recommended in the book.

I have a somewhat clearer throat while on the diet but not to the point where it's consistently better. The only thing that tends to really help, on a consistent basis, is if I'm drinking alcohol. I know this might sound counter intuitive, but the alcohol seems to thin out the moucous and my voice is so much clearer and fairly effortless. Granted, not everytime, but much of the time.

Does anyone else have a better voice while drinking??

Susan,

I've tried all the allergy medications, sprays, etc., too - with no help. I also did the shots, but I gave up after just 8 months, so I'm back on them. I'm told it takes at least 1 1/2 years to tell if it's helping or not. I'd be curious to hear your experience with the shots- as well as anyone else reading this posting.

Just out of curiosity, I'd be interested to know what part of the country you live. I'm wondering if there can be any contection with climate, humidity, etc.

Thanks.

I am awaiting an appointment with an ENT doctor the middle of next month, have not (yet) been diagnosed with SD, but I sound like Diane Rehm, and things don't inprove much in that regard, whether or not my allergies, mucus and postnasal drip are at their worst. I certainly don't think these factors help, and yes, I do think my voice would be much better if I could get rid of them. The allergies are to mold, pollens and dust. That means indoor and outdoor, something for all seasons. My Ionic Breeze Quadra machine from The Sharper Image helps me breathe. It has been a real blessing.
