"20/20" Tonight on ABC at 10pm ET

Here's something SD'ers might find interesting. Yesterday, on "The View" (morning TV talk show with five female hosts), Barbara Walters previewed her "20/20" interview tonight with Meredith Viera (a host on The View) and her husband, Richard Cohen.

Richard was formerly a Senior News Producer on CBS. His memoir("Blindsided: Lifting a Life Above Illness") is being released today, chronicling his 30-year battle with Multiple Sclerosis and two recent bouts with colon cancer.

The reason I mention this (other than the fact that the interview tonight appears to be revealing and educational, in regard to living with long-term chronic conditions) is because there was a segment of Richard speaking. My immediate reaction was that he had SD (some AD straining was evident). I had never heard an MS patient sound like an SD'er before.

After the preview ended, Meredith Viera said, "You can also hear Richard's voice problem. The MS has affected his vocal cords. In fact, long before Botox was used for cosmetic purposes, Richard was one of the first people getting Botox shots into his vocal cords." That comment was sure a welcome contrast to all the flippant comments about cosmetic use, on talk shows like The View, Oprah and others.

Based on the preview, seems there is some chance that the subject of Botox treatments for voice disorders may come up, as Barbara is so good about drawing people out and she may want to explain why he sounds like he does.

Other than that possibility, and listening to an SD voice on national TV, the piece (disease-wise) is focused on MS and cancer. He seems to be a real inspiration in coping with chronic illness, based on what I've seen so far. Some of his thoughts (in the book) regarding living with "invisible" disabilities are very insightful.

Thanks for bringing the program to our attention. i have a distant cousin who is female and my age. she has had MS for over twenty years and her voice now sounds like mine---AD/SD.
i have oftened wondered if there was a 'relationship' since we share the same gene 'pool' and with the tremors i have begun to experience hope i do not develop MS ------do people 50+ develop it.....just wondering?......................Betty

Hi All! Regarding last nights show 20/20 and Richard Cohen's story----------I was blown away! When he started to speak I immediately said to my cats "he sounds like he has AD/SD." I hadn't heard or read that SD and MS are related or distant cousins but you have to wonder. AND it does make perfect sense that Richard's vocal cords would come into play with his MS. I wonder if research has looked into any possibility between the two disorders. Afterall, they are located in the same part of the brain. Anyone out there in "SD Land" heard or know of such research?

Hi,
I'm a retired Physiotherapist with AD SD currently in remission.
MS and SD are, indeed, both neurological conditions, but with very different etiology.
MS is caused by plaques destroying the myelin sheath that surrounds nerves in the spinal cord and brain, causing fragmented messages getting to the muscles, including the muscles of speech.
SD is caused by a problem with the Basal Ganglia,a part of the brain that produces chemicals such as dopamine,to control the contraction of muscles.
In other words, MS is a basically mechanical problem, where SD is a chemical problem, and I don't really see a connection.
I could ,of course, be wrong.
I hope this helps a bit.

Pat,

Can I ask, what do you mean that your AD/SD is in remission? Did it go away or did you get Botox injections? Just curious.

I was very impressed by this media power couple. Meredith married Richard knowing about his MS. Richard's father has MS. Richard's book sounds great. What an inspiration they are!

I have not posted for a while because I kist my password, or so I thought, but this posting intrigued me! I posted last year when after several years of wondering what was wrong with my voice, I was diagnosed with SD. I had already come to that conclusion but after trying speech therapy I knew that I needed to look into the problem further. After my diagnosis, I posted and asked anyone if they had a diagnosis of SD AND multiple Sclerosis, which I was diagnosed with in 1988. I received no responses, probably because people were afraid that if they had SD that they might also have MS! Not so.

I agree that many MS persons do sound like they have SD, but I was told over and over that my voice was due to the MS, not another disorder. I think most people with a diagnosis of MS do not look into the situation further because they take their doctor's word. I have had three Botox injections and am getting ready to go to Portland, Oregon and have another one in the next month.

Hi Pat,

I clearly remember your posts and history on the BB over the years. But, as "the other Pat" indicates above, SD and MS are both neurological disorders but originate differently. Possibly an indirect relationship (in the CNS/brain), but not direct?

I forget --- do you see James Thomas, MD. in Portland? If so, that's great. He is a caring otolaryngologist who explores everything having to do with SD, on behalf of patients. I met him several years ago and he will be in Dallas in March.

More info on this issue, re Richard Cohen's book and his recent interview on 20/20 and on "The View" Monday (2/2):

For the first time since "The View" began 7 years ago, Meredith Viera's husband came on as a guest on Monday morning, after "20/20." He talked with the women of The View (without Meredith there). Again, his "AD-SD-sounding-voice" was evident. As on "20/20," there was no mention of Botox. On Monday, however, there wasn't even a mention of his voice, even though it was so obvious to any of us who knows what AD-SD sounds like. He's dealing with blindness also (result of MS), so his voice is not his primary concern.

Some of us have written to Meredith though, to thank her for mentioning Botox treatment for vocal disorders last Friday. With Richard dealing with MS, cancer and blindness as well as a clear case of an SD-voice, I wouldn't expect them to feature SD as a part of these interviews. A thank-you for Meredith's statement seemed to be in order though. Anyone else who wants to do this can e-mail Meredith at:

http://abc.go.com/daytime/theview/mail/vieira.html

They are two people, as a couple and as a family (with their three children), who are dealing with alot - with chronic disorders and being in the public eye. They set an incredible example for all of us. If anyone writes to Meredith, I hope the main message from our SD community would be "thank you."

Best wishes Pat. Good to see you back on the BB.

Hi Guys,
I guess neither Pat posts very often, but I do check the BB every day.
Pat O. ,I'm so sorry you have to battle both MS and SD.
Waiting so long for a diagnosis is awful, and any Neurologist worth their salt should recognize that there very well could be 2 separate conditions in one person.
Eveyone out there should not take no for an answer when you request further investigation.
The docs mean well, and are very smart, but also human.
Keep up the good fight.
Hi Lynne,
Nice to read your posts,as I always do.

Hi, Pat! Thanks for your reply. I count myself very fortunate in that neither diagnosis has stopped me from living a very productive and meaningful life. I have worked four years, full-time for an organization that is so wonderful to me. I am a valued employee and I love my job (and the paycheck)! They have stated to me that they will make whatever accomodations are necessary to make sure that I can continue to work for them. I have a very supportive husband and family who have adjusted well over the years to my limitations, which has made life much easier for me. I also have a very supportive church family that looks out for me! Life is good!
