MAOI

Does anybody know what MAOI is? I've noticed on some cold medicines that it says not to take if you are taking MAOI's. Are any of the medicines that are typically recommended for dystonias considered MAOI's?

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors. They are antidepressants that can interact severely with a number of foods and drugs, creating extreme hypertension (spike your blood pressure very high), hypertensive crisis, hemorrhage, and heart attack. Some of the drugs used for dystonia are antidepressants. MAOI's should never be prescribed without explaining what foods and drugs should specifically be avoided. And if you are taking an MAOI, you should always share that information with any medical people who treat you.
