Re: Zombie on Neurontin
Cinthia, I have been on Neurontin since last December and I'm having great results and no longer take Botox injections after needing them for 6 years. My doctor started me off very slowly with only nightly dosages but I really never had any side effects of the degree that you mentioned. The difference may relate to body size (just a guess). After several weeks he prescribed one capsule at night and one in the morning. After seeing great results for a number on months, he reduced my dosage and I currently only take one 300mg capsule in the morning with very good results. My voice is doing great. I have been following Neurontin very closely and have several people with whom I keep in touch via email to share our exeriences. Several mentioned that they also felt tired when they first started on Neurontin but all seemed to have adjusted within 1 - 2 weeks. I assume you are starting on Neurontin by only taking it at night. That appears to be the norm being prescribe to patients by doctors.
I sincerely hope that you are able to adjust to Neurontin and that it helps you as much as it has helped me. Best of luck. Don
Re: Zombie on Neurontin
Thanks so much, Don!
I'm taking 150 mg at night. I've noticed that my voice is smoother in the morning, but wears off by mid-day. I don't dare take another "hit" of Neurontin, for fear of slumping off at my desk (a loud bang, everyone looks up, and there's my head, crashed into my computer screen).
I'm hoping that this works, because I don't ever want another Botox. I'm sick of losing my voice and having the breathiness and then being able to talk for a very short time and then having the damed spasms coming back and then getting another shot and starting it all over again.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Take care,
Cinthia (AD/AK)
Re: Zombie on Neurontin
Cinthia,Your description of your frustration with SD and taking Botox is how all of us have felt, I'm sure. I surely hope the Neurontin works for you as it apparently has some others. I chose to have Dr. Berke's surgery because the botox quit working for me after taking it for about 8 years with really varied results each time. Never worked as good for me as some others but was a help for my severe SD. My voice, after surgery, is not perfect but better than I had dared to hope for and I am doing well. The best part is not having all the "ups and downs" you mention that wear away at us. I would have tried Neurontin if my doctors had ever mentioned it to me but I am so grateful I had the surgery. I am sure you will have to give it time like Don mentioned. I wish you luck in finding help for your voice. Barb
Re: Zombie on Neurontin
Cinthia,
I suspect and hope that you will find that these side effects will diminish in a few weeks if you experience is simular to other people who I have heard from. Then you will be able to take a dose in the morning and see benefit during the entire work day. After taking the nighttime dosage for a week or so, I used the weekends to see if my body had adjusted enough to take 2 capsules a day. Fortunately, I had no problems. Best of luck.

Neurontin has SHORT half-life
Cinthia,I seriously doubt if you would notice any improvement in your voice if you are taking the neurontin at night. The drug only stays in your system for about six hours. That's why people with epilepsy or manic depression usually take neurontin three times a day. If these doctors are telling people to take neurontin at bedtime it must be because they're afraid that people will get turned off from the medicine too quickly due to the drowsiness side-effect. But the way to do it, is to take it during the day and start out with small dosages, say 100mg twice a day. Then as your body gets used to it, you gradually increase the dose until you reach an optimum level of improvement but with tolerable side-effects, perhaps 400mg twice a day. I've also noticed that people are complaining about spaciness and mental fuzziness; one way to counteract this is to get a really good nutritional supplement for memory and alertness; there's a fabulous one I take called "Brain Lightning." I admit is has a ridiculous name, but this supplement contains a synergistic mix of scientifically-validated herbs, minerals, and vitamins. You have to order it over the web, however; go to Google.com and do a search.
Something else to keep in mind: everyone taking Neurontin (gabapentin) should be aware that there is new drug, in phase three trials, called Pregabalin. Pregabablin is the result of a slight alteration of the moleculular structure of Neurontin. Apparently, it has a much longer half-lif and perhaps fewer side-effects. Right now it's being tested for the treatment of Social Anxiety Disorder because it seems to lower social inhibitions and make people more talkative--that in itself would probably be helpful for most people with SD.

Re: Zombie on Neurontin
Hey Don,How about other side effects? Have you had constipation or ankle swelling....I suppose they could be related :-). I had some voice improvement after taking Neurontin for about 2 weeks but the water retention scared me off. I am thinking about trying it one more time. thx.

Re: Zombie on Neurontin
Gavin,
I really have not had any side effects. I do make it a point to always drink a lot of water each day and I suspect that would help those complications you listed. The benefit to my voice has been just wonderful. I would also add that I feel much better overall which I suspect is particially due to the reduced life stresses associated with not being able to talk. I've been on Neurontin for 9 months now and so far so good.

Re: Zombie on Neurontin
I've been on Neurontin for almost two weeks now, and while it's really helped my mood, it hasn't done anything at all for my voice.
I haven't had any other side effects than drowsiness, though. I feel as if all my motivation has been sucked right out of me; and worse yet, I don't seem to care. I've been watching television (something I never do) and reading trashy books. Meanwhile, my graduate paper is lagging behind. Can't seem to get my brain to function.
I feel pleasantly lulled, almost as if I am high (It's the '70s again, eh??). Hopefully this will pass soon.
Thanks for all the comments,
Cinthia
Re: Zombie on Neurontin
Hi Cinthia,
I have been on Neurontin 600mg three times a day for about three months now. It sounds like a larger dose then anyone else is taking. My neuro gave me instructions to raise the dose up to that amount within two weeks.( It is Mary Downs at Prov.) I also take Nortriptyline,25 mg. three times a day for chronic pain. Don't know if both these drugs compliment each other or not but seem to help my voice. I only have "bad"voice usually with people on the phone I don't know or people I meet. Usually my voice is pretty good.I'm going to stick with it. It's pretty expensive as one prescription of 100 cap doesn't last a full month & costs me $30 for the Neurontin(the other med is much less expensive).I had a stroke the night of my last botox injection in Jan.so you can see why I won't take that route anymore. It's interesting that the stroke was in the short term memory and language center. I gained them back pretty quickly but still can't find the words I want sometimes. How the stroke happened is still unknown. Could have been an air bubble from the injection--no one knows.
Re: Zombie on Neurontin
Don,Good for you. There have been several folks on this board who have had similar results. My voice was better during the 2-3 weeks I was taking neurontin. At least I think it was. It was right in the middle of my botox window, about 6 weeks after the shot, which is the time my voice normally is at it's peak anyway so who knows. I may try it again but dread the week of constipation and the water retention thing. Thanks for sharing. Gavin
Re: Zombie on Neurontin
Hi there, well I am now in the 6 months or maybe longer with the nuerontin. My raspy, breathy voice has improved so much. I posted that a drug rep who happens to live in my building is for Neurontin. You can't find a safer drug at this time. The side effect of feet swelling, raise your legs up, drink more water, the sedation at first made me crazy but once the drug gets in the system that improves. I know that it works because 1/2 hr before my dose the voice and body for that fact start to play the games! So good luck and hang in there I am now taking 900mg 4 x day.
