Hello everyone!

Happy New Year to you all. I am due to receive my first Botox injections on the 5th Feb. I have never looked forward to injections so much in my life....

I have a beautiful 6 year old daughter and have been with my partner for 2 years. I am 38 this year and my "clock is ticking.....". My partner doesnt have children of his own and we are looking forward to trying to have a child in the future.

The timing isnt good with my first botox injection next month and I was wondering if anyone has any information regarding risks of Botox and pregnancy? (risk enough at 38 I guess!!).

I would not want to increase risks of abnormalities in my unborn and as yet unconceived child. My have have this injection and see if it works...

I have ADSD and my voice is shocking so I really want to give the injections a try but not at any cost.....

Any pointers in any direction would be great. Have looked on the internet but most say that testing hasnt been carried out and risks are unknow!

I was scheduled to have botox (my first one) when I found out I was preg. with my second child. I did not proceed with the botox, nor did I schedule any after the birth since I was breast feeding. At that time, as now, there were no studies but I did not want to risk it. I do not know of any problems though with receiving botox and the ability to conceive.

Hi Louise,
Dr. Mark Gordon discussed the BOTOX/pregnancy issue in some detail at the July 2001 DMRF Leadership Meeting. You can find the report on this meeting at:
http://www.dystonia-support.org/
and then follow the link for "Symposium Reports".
Dr. Gordon's talk is near the end of the report, scroll down about 3/4 of the way to find it.
The short answer is that a number of women have been injected with BOTOX during pregnancy with no apparent adverse effects on the fetus. Some women have even had actual botulism from food poisoning, been paralyzed and on life support during a pregnancy, and given birth to healthy children. However, most physicians will likely advise against BOTOX injections during pregnancy as a precaution since little is known for sure.

P.S. From the male persective, I can tell you that I have received BOTOX regularly for 7 years, and I am now the father of a healthy 5 month old baby girl... but of course the mother's health has a much greater effect on the development of the child than the father's.

Louise, I was asking very similar questions of the bulletin board last April! I had not yet started my period when I got my last Botox injection in April (I'm ABSD), but 2 preg tests that week indicated negative results. About 3 days after the injection, I found out I WAS pregnant - and it scared me tremendously because of the Botox. First let me tell you that I delivered a HEALTHY, beautiful baby girl, full term, on 12/29/03.......and her doctors say she is in perfect health!! (they knew my Botox history too)

Now - back to your question - my neurologist told me that Botox is usually not given to pregnant women with SD because it paralyzes the targeted muscle. The fear is that if some of the Botox were to make it into the blood stream and then to the uterus (a muscle), that it could cause a miscarriage. He also told me that he did not know of any actual cases of this occurring in his or his colleagues' practices. Then I came to this board and was given a lot of great info, including the symposium information that Bill posted.

I NEVER ever would have had a Botox injection last year if I thought I was actually pregnant at the time – but after doing research, I was able to put my mind at some ease and concentrate on a happy and healthy pregnancy.

I too am breastfeeding, so I won't be getting another injection for a while. But baby's health comes first!! Interestingly, though, for 2 days after delivery, my voice was near normal - but it's back to its ABSD self now.

Best wishes to you and your family, Liz

Hi Liz,

Thank you so much (and to the other replies I have received)for responding to my message.

Congratulations on the birth of your daughter.... I am sure she will bring you great joy (as well as sleepless nights and tears!!) :-)

You went through what I fear. Thank you for sharing your story with me. I am due for my first botox injection on 5th Feb and am keeping figures crossed that it works....

When we actively start trying to get pregnant I will stop the botox. I have read a heap on this subject and although it doesnt seem to have been confirmed that it will damage the child its not worth taking the risk....

Will let you know how I get on after botox!!

Take care

Louise

My husband and I were in the same situation. I'm 33 and we want to have children soon. We decided to postpone trying since I was due to have my first Botox injection this past July and I was advised to not have the treatments while pregnant. I did not want to take any risks. We have recently decided we are ready and I will not get anymore injections until after I have the baby. It was a tough decision back in July because we were so ready to start trying for a baby, but I was really looking forward to my first Botox injection as well.

Hi All
I'm a bit more paranoid than most and read somewhere that SD is something which could be hereditary. Any idea of this being true and passed on to the kids. For me, it came on when I was 20+, no one in my family has it but then again who knows these things...
