Yeast Infection's of the Mouth & SD

I just wanted to see if anyone else with ADSD or ABSD have experienced a yeast infection of the mouth. I had it several times. It was really bad and very painful. It is a white coating over the tongue and throat area. It feels very raw and sometimes is all over in spots.

It is almost like scorching your tongue on something. Like chip's or something too hot to drink, etc. I was put on a strong medication for yeast. It helped, but not a lot. It finally got well and I think I may have it again now. I am having a lot of discomfort in my throat and it is hard to eat at times, cause my throat is so raw and sore.

Crazy, AHHH. Replies appreciated. Jan

Jan -

Well, I know Thursday is a big day for you (thank you for my email in response to my post) but I just had to respond to *this* post. I think you may have hit on the answer to a problem I've been having! Yes, my tongue has a white coating (I know that happens when I let myself get a little dehydrated, but this is really persistant and strong) and yes it feels like my tongue got scorched. I thought it might have something to do with reflux and I was in to my ENT and he gave me a trial of Nexum, but the white coating and raw feeling are still there. I'm gonna start eating yogurt (with active cultures) like mad and see if it helps!

I'm sorry that you are having a flair-up right now, and I suspect it is the stress (yeast flair-ups are like that.) I'm very interested to hear if other SDers have this symptom and I'm wondering what would cause it in our cases (besides stress.)

I wish you well, Robin

I've done further research on this topic, and it makes a certain amount of sense that SDers may be prone to this (although there have been no other takers on this thread..) Apparently the condition of having xerostomia (dry mouth) can attribute to this condition and also a lowered immune system (which I think anyone dealing with a chronic condition like SD may be prone to.)

Other contributing factors can be poor dental care, especially with people with false teeth; pregnacy; and use of antibiotics. Babies, the elderly, and people with AIDS are the typical populations that get this.
BTW, an oral yeast infection is also known as Thrush.

Some home remedies:
- Gentian violet (1%)
Gentian violet (1%) is a dye that kills bacteria and fungi. It can be an effective treatment for thrush. The product label states that gentian violet is not for internal use, but it is safe when sparingly applied directly to infected areas in the mouth. The patches should be coated with gentian violet 1 to 3 times daily using a cotton swab. Gentian violet will stain skin and clothing. It should not be given to newborns because it can cause open sores (ulcers) in the mouth.
- Listerine
- Hydrogen peroxide
Rinse your mouth several times a day with a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution. To make the rinse, mix 1 part of hydrogen peroxide with 2 parts of water.

You should see a doctor for perscription treatments if the home treatments do not show improvement within 7 days or the condition is getting worse.

The above information is from Blue Shield's "My Lifepath" service, and the article was written by Healthwise, Incorporated.

Hi Robin,

Thank you for your interest and reply to this thread. I was a little hesitant to post this, because it is not something that happens orally to adults. Mostly babies.

I have had this a few times in the past and I was put on a medication that starts with a "D", Can't remember the proper name right now. However it did not help a lot. It is just something that kind of has to run its course. I did use the Gentian Violet and it did help, especially with the discomfort and the ability to eat. I think mine just comes and goes, for some strange reason.

You made a lot of good treatment comments. I am also courious to know if other SD's have had this problem. Regards, Jan
