How long will this Breathy Botox voice last?

I had my first shot of Botox 14 days ago. I received 1.25 units on each side. This breathy voice is driving me nuts. Can anyone comment on the length of time until good voice returns?

Ken,
I feel for you as I am 11 days into my third shot and my voice is also still breathy.

The length of breathiness can last a few days to as much as 6 weeks I believe. The good news for you is that your dosage was very low (2.5 units each side is considered average). Therefore, it is unlikely that you would be on the high side of recovery time. Although everyone is different.

My first shot I received 1.25 units each side and was only breathy for a day or so. My second shot I received 2 units each side and again was breathy for only a few days.

The lesson here is that each shot is different even if the dosage is the same. To little and the benefits don't last as long to much and you can be breathy for a long time.

What a condition to have! Hang in there and keep reading the BB.

Ken:

I had my very first botox shot 4 weeks ago. I had .75 to each side and I am still a bit breathy/hoarse but am hoping it will clear up soon. The spasms are gone and I am grateful for that. I hope your breathiness gets better soon. Best of luck.

Terri

I had my first injection in December, and the breathiness lasted for about 2.5 weeks. However, I only had .6 units on each side because it was my first time and I was really scared. I also had some minor difficulty swallowing,, I don't know if you are experiencing that too. All of the negative side effects diminished in about 2.5 weeks for me and I had a normal voice for about 3 months. Hope you recover soon! I will be going for another injection soon because my voice is bad again. I noticed that you are 35..I am 37. We're too young for this!
Good luck!
Andrea

I turned 38 last month and have had ADSD for three years ... do I detect a trend here? ;-)

I hope to get my first shots next month. I'm currently waging war with my insurance company and doctors. I've read about all the side effects, but the thought of being able to speak without the spasms seems to me to be well worth it.

My doctor says that the average age for SD is getting younger. I thought I was the only patient under age 60 until I started reading this bulletin. Did you or do you use your voice a lot? I am still wondering if I caused this myself because I sang in a band in nightclubs for 10 years prior to this. It is good that you are trying the Botox because it is supposed to work best for AD/SD.
Good luck..and read some of the other posts regarding side effects like breathiness and swallowing, etc like I mentioned!
Take care,
Andrea

No Andrea, I don't believe I ever used my voice beyond what would be considered normal day to day activity. But I too have read the theory that SD is sometimes a condition brought on by abuse.

Actually, I believe the breathiness may be a good thing. I've noticed the spasms are now occurring when I inhale between sentences.

But I'll continue to fight and will eventually get the treatment I feel I need. It's just a question of time.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

I was just wondering how your voice was doing and if you were able to get your appointment scheduled for Botox injections? (I thought you mentioned that you were trying to schedule it for the beginning of July?)My next Botox shot is on July 16th, so mine is coming up soon, as well.
The breathiness after Botox was not a problem for me, in fact, it only lasted 10 days and I liked it much better than the strangled sound that I normally have. I am hoping that my 2nd shot will yield the same results. I felt the positive results as soon as about 14 hours after I was injected! I remember feeling like someone had just untied a rope that had been tied around my neck for 3 years. So, you're right about the breathiness being a good thing, you probably will enjoy it.
Good luck and let me know how things are working out.
Andrea

Hi Andrea,

Voice is pretty much gone. Considering I first noticed symptoms three years ago, I don't believe the rate of deterioration to be linear ... once it starts to really go bad, it really goes bad quickly.

One positive side effect though. As a consequence of my lack of voice, my family, friends and co-workers are learning how to read lips. ;-)

Well I finally got my PCP to refer me to the ENT who runs the BOTOX Clinic at the University of Texas Health Science Center here in San Antonio. That only took six weeks and a written appeal to Pacificare. But I got my referral ... that's all that matters. Unfortunately, the earliest appointment I could get is July 31. I know the doctor only gives the treatments once a month, around the tenth, and so I hope to get my first treatment in early August.

The ironic part of the whole thing is that earlier the same day I got my referral, my older sister was referred to the same ENT for a different reason. You can imagine my reaction when I heard the news. Let's just say I used a few "colorful superlatives."

I just feel so much better now knowing that I will get a more realistic treatment than speech therapy. I don't speak better, but I do feel better. Some days the depression was really bad.

I'm glad to read that you are doing well, and thanks for asking about me.

Keep in touch,
Mike

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to add my two cents worth here. I took botox injections for 2 years and it was always different with each dose. It is hard to say just how long the breathy voice will last after being injected. I can say that after the injections it is such a relief with no spasms after you get over the initial 3 day period. I do agree the breathy whispery voice is a pain to deal with, but we can't have it both ways as we all know.

My injections varyied from 1 month to 2 months usually excluding the last time which was about 7 or 8 months. By all means Botox is a great form of treatment so I guess what I am trying to say is to hang in there guys, it will get better in its on time. With the doctor finding 5the right amount to inject you each time and you getting into a routine of things. I am here whispery along with you all so I know and understand your feelings and I wish the best to all of you. Regards, Jan

Thanks everyone for your comments. I sure hope the good voice lasts a long time as the breathy period is definately wearing me down.

I'm going onto Day 21 tomorrow, and still breathy. I did notice my voice break to a lower pitch this morning for the first time. It only lasted a word or two and almost startled me when I heard something other than a whisper come out of my mouth. Hopefully, that is a sign of normal voice making a return. Does it happen gradually or all of a sudden?

Hi Ken

I'm 37 and have been receiving botox injections for about 11 years. I have had a wide range of results, including the major breathiness you describe. I find that my voice comes back very gradually. It starts with one word, then a phrase, then a sentence at a time. Eventually I can speak normally, but can't raise the volume of my voice without getting the breathiness.

So anyway, I would say it's good news that you heard some voice. It sounds like a start to me. I notice your post was 5 days ago, how is it now?
