Yes, I also had/have that exact symptom. I posted about it some time ago, but received no relevant responses from anyone else reporting that they had it. In my case, I had stable, and mild, ADSD for 25+ years. About three years ago I had a very bad case of bronchitis which lasted for months. When the bronchitis finally lifted, my SD seemed to have morphed into a severe form of ABSD. My ENT thought I might have also developed a "compensatory" case of MTD on top of my original ADSD Now, any attempt to speak immediately causes a throat tickle and that "fog horn" coughing sound. Additionally, my voice seems permanently stuck in whisper mode -- it is the only way I can avoid the fog horn. Curious how thus compares to your situation? Wondering if anyone else out there has similar experience? |

I was diagnosed a couple of years ago by an e.n.t. Specialist and he put a camera down my throat and just said it was spasmodic dysphonia and it would probably just come and go. For the past nine months I have not been able to talk. I too was in hospital last year and had chest problems and no voice at all since. My chest specialist is arranging for me to see a neurologist to have tests done. I find it so frustrating can't speak on the phone. The cough sounds like a sea lion barking but my husband says its a fog horn. This is the first time I have spoken to anyone else in the same boat. |

Does your cough just trigger at random moments like a normal cough? I find in my case that when I attempt to talk, I feel an immediate tickle in my larynx which causes my voice to choke off. This is often followed by the sea-lion sound that you described. Since the bronchitis, my SD symptoms have changed significantly. I used to be able to speak fairly fluently, and I could usually get by the "breaks" and the choked off parts of words. But, recently (since the "cough" syndrome started), I can barely say two words out loud before my voice totally drops to a whisper. My ONLY exception is for the first couple of minutes after I awaken in the mornings, I have some fluency -- and also while I am yawning, my voice is fairly fluent. Otherwise it is whisper or "bark" like a seal. I would like to hear more about your symptoms and experiences. Also would like to hear thoughts of other readers. Thanks!! |
