GERD is gastro-esophageal reflux disease or disorder. Many people with SD have also been diagnosed with GERD, including myself. It basically involves the backflow of acid from the stomach into the esophagus because of a weak sphincter valve that should close and stop the acid backing up into the throat but doesn't. This can cause problems in the larynx due to the acid action on the lining of the esophagus.

It is very important to get this under control, because cancer of the esophagus can happen. Related link: http://www.gerd.com/faq/gerd-faq.htm#1

Is there a difference between GERD and what is called "Acid Reflux"? I do experience the symptoms, but they seem to correspond with "adventurous dietary choices".

Thanks,
Mike

Narelle and Mike,

The link I posted above does a good job of fully explaining GERD.

No Mike, there is no real difference between GERD and acid reflux (reflux of acid up into the esophagus)

Narelle, you're right - the British ( and obviously all you guys in the land of OZ ) spell esophagus as oesophagus and therefore GORD instead of GERD.

As an ex-Brit living in Canada and having the US as my neighbour ( neighbor) means that I have to carry two spellings of many words around :-)

I just imagined Australian doctors looking puzzled as a patient asked about GERD :)
