I haven't noticed this as much, but I have noticed if I get dehydrated that it adds an extra level of poor vocal quality that seems to compound the raspiness. Perhaps this could be a factor and not the actual exercise? Just a thought.

Yes, my voice is also worse after exercise.

Thanks for you insight but in my case I don't think dehydration plays a role. I drink a lot water and as I'm just starting out running again I only went maybe 1 mile.

Scott,
What is your diagnosis? My voice was still poor today. Once it gets a little better I plan on running again to see if it effects me the same way. Thanks

My diagnosis is adductor spasmodic dysphonia. Any exercise makes my voice worse but those exercises that involve valsalva such as tennis and weight lifting magnify the problem. I think the stress on the vocal cord muscles from this type of exercise cause them to spasm more after exercise.

Interesting thanks. I do lift weights and have never really noticed a correlation but aerobic exercise such as running really seems to effect me. I'll have to pay closer attention and see if weight lifting has an effect as well.

I'm wondering if the stress of exercising and lifting weights would have the opposite affect on my ABSD and help to keep them closed? I'll try it out and see what happens.

Yes ! Absolutely . I'm a runner and anytime I exercise my voice is much worse. This even includes mowing the grass.

Muscle tension and SD are closely related. The reason your voice is better in the morning and worse at night is the same as before and after working out. I bet some of this can be controlled if you focus on relaxation- particularly in the laryngeal region, while lifting. That's what I try and I think it improves my overall breathing and fitness. Good luck.

Wow, exercise always helped me. During exercise especially. Hmmm.
