My ENT said my left vocal chord either was paralyzed and is getting better - or it is becoming paralyzed.

He also said I have muscle tension dysphonia.

I just started speech thereapy yesterday and the therapist said that these two statements contradict eachother.

However, I'm new to this, so I don't know one thing from another at this point.

I am a graduate student in Speech-Language Pathology and I also have ADSD. I have worked with many individuals with various voice problems including vocal cord paralysis and muscle tension dysphonia. Many people with paralyzed vocal cords may develop muscle tension dysphonia from straining or using other muscles in and above the larynx to help "get their voice out" and compensate for the cord not working properly. With speech therapy, the goal is to reduce tension and teach you how to phonate (or bring your vocal cords together) in a way that does not continue to create tension or cause damage to the cords. Therapy will teach you how to improve your voice with voice exercises.

I was diagnosed with a right paralyzed vocal cord on 11/1. I was told that I had nerve damage to the right laryngeal nerve. I went to an ENT specialist at Emory's Voice Trauma Center in ATlanta, GA. The doctor suggested that I get a filler injection of Radiesse into my right vocal cord. I got the injection today. My voice is back to normal today after the injection. The right vocal cord is still paralyzed but now it's fatter so that the healthy vocal cord doesn't have to work so hard to compensate for the paralyzed cord. As soon as the injection wears off,I will see if the right laryngeal nerve has healed. I was told it takes 2 months to a year for the nerve to heal. If it doesn't heal by 12 months, the doctor said that I may want to consider an operation. I'm hoping the nerve will heal because I don't want to have an operation. On 12/15, the ENT doctor is going to do an EMG along with the neurologist to see if the right laryngeal nerve is firing and working at all. Then on 12/22, I have a follow up appointment. The filler injection usually only lasts 2-3 months and if the nerve hasn't healed then my voice will return to the way it was and I will probably get another injection. The specialist told me that 60% of people don't need another injection because the nerve heals and the paralysis has gone away.
