I've noticed when I talk that I'm holding my breath and this, or course, affects my speech. I'm trying to breath from my diagphram, but it seems my breathing and talking at the same time is messed up. I'm trying to be more aware of my breathing and relax when I speak, but I do this over and over again. I also tense my mid-section, which of course affects my voice also. Does anyone else have this problem? |

Yes, I have the exact same problem. I have been to speech therapy and have become aware of when I am holding my breath. I do this with a lot of physical activities as well. I am currently in physical therapy to loosen neck and strap muscles and the PT keeps telling me to breathe. Our breathing has been affected by a subconscious compensation when trying to speak - even before a diagnosis was extended. I have learned to slow down my speaking and try not to run out of air - thus, making a conscious effort to breathe. I can only explain it to others as not having a trigger to breathe or take in air. I often put my hand on my abdomen to also remind me to breathe. Yoga has helped as well - a slow, methodical exercise that concentrates on breathing. You'll discover what works for you. :) |

Thank you for sharing your experience. That's exactly how I feel when talking, like I'm running out of air. I used to do Yoga, time for me to head back to Yoga classes. I'm going to make a conscious effort to slow down and be more aware, thank you |

You are more aware than I, because I didn't realize this until after I had SLAD-R surgery and found out that I had picked up compensatory habits, so I tended to hold my breath or talk on residual breath. If you want to email me, I can send you the techniques that I learned at USC speech therapy. trish0@dslextreme.com Put SD in the subject header so it doesn't go into spam. |

I also have a problem getting enough air out to get words out. Thus, my voice is choked out severely. I was originally diag. with SD/AD in Sept. 2008, but since that time and after many doctors' opinions, I was recently told I do not have SD. I had a spontaneous return of my voice last November which lasted about 6 weeks. My doctor (ENT) could not explain it, but I saw him and my speech pathologist and they heard my voice when it was fully restored. Now it is gone again, so frustrating. I have a voice audio soundclip of my "testimony" which I shared at my church on Dec. 5, 2010 after my voice returned. It is a miracle the way it happened, as you will hear in my testimony. I believe my voice will return fully again. In the meantime, I need to be patient and continue to seek answers to this mystery. If anyone would like to hear this, please email me at shelleystipes@gmail.com and I will gladly send you a copy. |

Thank you for sharing your experience. My voice also returns to normal at times. Not as long as yours did, but I've had three days at a time where it returns to normal. I start to think it is going to stay good and the next day I get up and I'm hoarse and raspy. It is very frustrating and there doesn't seem to be any reason for it to return or to fall back into hoarseness. I too continue to search for answers. |
