Hi Everyone,

I would like to learn some of the food & beverages to avoid in order to have better vocal quality...
I have heard that yogurt and dairy products cause more mucus in the throat and nasal area. Also, Citrus fruits are more acid and can cause problems...

I have learned that a lot of singers drink Apple Juice and of course lot's of water...Since it has been so cold recently, I have been drinking hot apple juice/diluted with some water at night...sorta like hot Apple Cider. I sometimes also heat apple juice and add an herbal tea bag for extra flavor...This really seems to calm & ease my throat.

Any info will be appreciated.

Though this does not address foods & beverages to avoid, it is sort of related to your question. It is a list of things to avoid.

Don’t clear your throat or cough habitually
Swallow slowly; drink some water; relax your throat;

Don’t yell, cheer or scream
Substitute whistling, clapping or ringing a bell, blowing a horn…

Avoid talking in noisy situations such as over loud music
Always face the person you are talking to and get as close as reasonably possible

Don’t try to speak to large audiences without the aid of a microphone
Always use a microphone

Don’t sing beyond comfortable pitch and loudness ranges
Monitor these habits and try to avoid them

Avoid nervous vocally abusive habits during speaking such as throat clearing, talking quickly, holding your breath, talking on insufficient breath, taking on a monotone pitch, avoid aggressive or low pitched voice
Monitor these habits to try to avoid them

Don’t yell or speak extensively during strenuous physical exercise
Wait until your breathing can accommodate optimal voice production

Don’t talk in a low monotone pitch and don’t allow your voice to drop so low that the sound becomes gravelly (glottal fry)
Allow your pitch to vary freely ; keep your breath powered by breath control;

Don’t hold your breath when you try to speak
Allow a relaxed inflow of breath before speaking

Don’t speak beyond a normal breath cycle and avoid squeezing out a few more words
Speak slowly, pausing often, at natural phrase boundaries, to allow the breath to replace before you go on.

Don’t tighten up your upper chest, shoulders and throat to breathe in or to push voice out
Allow breath to replace naturally without raising your shoulders and upper chest. Be aware of and allow natural expansion/release in the lower torso, abdomen and back and sides during the breathing cycle

Never clench your teeth or hold your jaw tense or whisper
Keep upper and lower teeth separate. Allow your jaw to remain passive and to “float” as you speak

Anyone have tips for getting your voice out of the low glottal fry? Once I drop into it I can't get out of it.

A speech therapist told me dairy products,(especially milk), and carbonated drinks can add to voice difficulties. Also she advised to avoid orange juice and other acidic drinks and foods. Good luck and good voice. Jack

Thanks Jack...

I find that hot drinks are very soothing. I have also heard that caffeine is not good for the vocals.

Wow! I guess that leaves us with water only:-) I agree especially with caffeine and Cola's.

I was told it's the acidity in coffee and soft drinks thats the problem...not the caffeine.
