Hi - I am looking for some local resources as I not have a job that requires much more speaking and I've very frustrated (although I take baclofen and atenenol which help a lot), so I'm looking at going down a new road to improve my symptoms.

Hi Eric,

I'm not familiar with the medications your taking for SD...The only treatment I've had is Botox injections...For the most part they work. However, since I've had them for so many years, it get's harder for my Dr. to find "fresh muscle" to iject. I live in Asheville, NC and receive treatment at the Wake Forest Center for Vocal Disorders in Winston Salem.
I did have voice therapy in Asheville for a short time and the excerises can help. In my opinion Botox gives the best relief with spasms.

Hey Eric, and welcome to the SD community! The first of the medications you cite is more commonly used in movement disorder type diseases such as Parkinsomism and ALD. The second is usually prescribed for hypertension.

Since we are just getting aquainted, perhaps you could quickly discuss your SD diagnosis to make sure we are talking the same condition (no pun intended). For example, are you abductor or adductor type? How long ago were you diagnosed and by what type physician? Etc. That will help all these fine SD folks better respond to you.

Let me say, as well, that some speech "challenges" are common to some movement disorders as well, and my doctors, early on, were concerned that I was headed toward Parkininson's, which I am not. So you see how correct & precise diagnosis is so important to correct & effective treatment.

Keep the faith that you can improve Eric, and you will improve. Be open, be confident, be kind to yourself and those around you, and be free from fear for these are the keys to maximum use and improvement of the voice that has come to characterise you. Promise. Oh, and know that you are not alone and that none of this is your fault!

Keep in touch please.

I went to see Kim Almand in Maryville who has since referred me to the Voice Center in Nashville. After conducting a phone interview with Brienne from there, I am scheduled for an appointment with Dr Garrett on February 28th. Kim suggested that since mine is on the less severe end, she thinks I might be a candidate for therapy or even botox.
