I have been reading posts here for many months, but this is my first input!
As no one had responded about the GABA, I thought I would tell what I know. But first, about me. I have had Cervical Dystonia for 8 years. Although I don't have S.D. itself, my vocal cords have been affected at times. I had 3 excellent sessions with a speech therapist 6 years ago, and what she taught me enabled me to understand the difficulties I was having. That took away a lot of stress which in itself helped me manage my voice when problems did occur. Reading aloud still sometimes gives problems as odd words come out wrong, or in the wrong order. As I have read about S.D having this problem too, its all about the neurological complexities having an overlap with the different forms of dystonia. Botox overfow from my sternocleidomastoid muscle not only gives swallowing problems, but at times vocal cord weakness. And as botox wears off, my voice box will protrude quite obviously outwards in my throat, and can get pushed to one side. So, back to the GABA, which is an amino acid. GABA is one of the major inhibitory neurotransmitters in the brain. It can be involved in dystonia when it is not working at optimum levels and is targeted by some of the drugs prescribed for it. GABA requires nutrients to work effectively, adequate zinc and vitamin B6 being two of them. Two other amino acids in the body, Taurine and Glycine, support GABA function. There has been a lot of past discussion and information sharing on the NSTA [National Spasmodic Torticollis Association] Forum around GABA and other supplements. For me personally, taking zinc and a Vitamin B complex with a good level of B6 has been very helpful I also take a GABA supplement when botox wears off until it kicks in again. Doing this reduces contractions in my neck muscles significantly.

Thank you Linda,I have SD and I read all the posts here all the time. I started taking GABA recently and I take other natural supplements such as the B's and Choline. Your info was helpfull, BTW, I also document all changes I make in my diet and in my routine. Lately I cut out all artificial sweeteners and I have notice big changes in my system, not in my voice - but in my gastrointestinal system. I belive that our whole body is linked to each other and this condition may be a reflection of something not right somewhere, it just shows in the vocal cords. So I will continue to monitor and share. Thanks.

Wasabi
I'm interested to know how much GABA you take. I only take this amino acid supplement as botox wears off [I have C.D] at about 9 weeks until about 2 weeks after botox. I vary my dose according to how I am. I take between 750mg plain GABA capsule once a day up to 2 x 750mg twice a day. No side effects. While I was researching GABA as an inhibitory neurotrasmitter, I became aware Glycine was always being mentioned. Initially I took no regard to this. Then one day I decided to Google "intrusive thoughts" because when botox wears off, I find I get particular annoying thoughts that won't go away. And that led me into Glycine! So I tried it, 500mg a day when the thoughts intrude. Its quite incredible the way it works for me - the thoughts just disappear totally. What an amazing thing our brain is. But I also feel the Glycine assists the GABA as I can take less GABA with the glycine. My hubby [no dystonia] was at that time sleeping badly. In my reading I discovered Glycine is being now used in Sleep Disorder clinics. So hubby tried it. Amazing results! I always sleep well regardless. But any one here who has problems, worth trying! Your question was very educational because the only time I had heard the term 'GABA" was in reference to Gabapentin, generic for the neurotransmitter prescription drug Neurontin. I took this for a couple of years along with Klonopin and it was a good substitute for Botox. Unfortunately, the effect wore off and it no longer worked. |

Gabapentin was devised to work on the GABA receptor but they found it actually didn't at all! It works on something completely different. So there is no relationship at all between GABA and Gabapentin. If you google it you will see more. Linda |

Well its been couple of weeks since I began taking Gaba. Voice wise I do not notice any difference yet but one thing is that I have dreams every single day. It may be a coincidence. |

About the time my dystonia started I lost all my dreaming. I had always been a big dreamer - all sorts of stories happened in my dreams and I used to recount them to my hubby. They were never difficult dreams, so I missed them when they just disappeared. I don't think I dreamt for about 5 years. Then suddenly they reappeared.
Then on another forum I used, a woman posted about lucid dreaming. I looked this up and was fascinated by the info. I found dreaming and dream recall is dependent upon adequate levels of vit B6 in the brain. I had been supplementing B6 and zinc, so felt this was why my dreams had returned. From all that I have gone on to learn about neurotransmitters, Vit B6 and zinc are essential for GABA transmission. The fact that you have enhanced your GABA and dream again perhaps shows that they all interlink and depend on each other rather than just the B6. Another thing that happened to me was I had the most extrordinary colour dreams the night and next night after my MRI. Also many years ago when I tried a magnetic wrist strap for the first 3 nights.
