Spasmodic dysphonia (SD), a focal form of dystonia, is a neurological voice disorder that involves involuntary "spasms" of the vocal cords causing interruptions of speech and affecting the voice quality. SD can cause the voice to break up or to have a tight, strained, or strangled quality. If you look on the NSDA website, you will find other things that will help you understand (sample voices, essays written by other SDers, links to current research articles, etc.) The NSDA also offers resources such as brochures, books, and DVDs that do an excellent job explaining SD. There may be an SD support group in your area. You will be able to learn from guest speakers and others with SD. Look on the website under support or contact me directly, and I will find the closest one to you and put you in contact with the support group leader. I would be happy to discuss my experiences with you too. Carol

Welcome on the NSDA online support. I run the Atlanta SD Support Group and have also received treatment at the Emory Voice Center. If you have any questions please e-mail me. If you are interested in our group for support again contact me. We just had a meeting on Saturday but if you're interested, I could e-mail you the newsletter from that meeting. It might help clarify some things for you about SD. Good luck with your diagnosis and again feel free to contact me. Concetta Griffin,

Hi there, I was diagnosed in July and went to Emory 2 weeks ago for a second opinion and just this past Thursday had my first botox injection. It usually starts with some kind of throat problem, mine was allergies in May and morphed into this. I love my Dr. at Emory (I'm not sure if i'm allowed to mention specific names on here). If you would like to email me to ask more specifics since we are both going to emory, my email is pagepartyof6@bellsouth.net Try to keep a positive attitude, I believe that is crucial! |
