Question About BOTOX Treatment in Virginia

I have ADSD. I am trying to find a doctor who has a high success rate with his/her BOTOX injections for treatment of SD. Currently, I received injections through the front of my neck, and my doctor uses an EMG machine. I would like to continue this method of injection. I will be living in Forest, VA (near Lynchburg). There are no doctors listed on the NSDA website in that area, but there are options within driving distance both in northern North Carolina and Virginia. If you have experience with BOTOX injections and would like to share your experiences with me so that I may make an educated decision on who to try first, please contact me at rdoles@ieee.org

THANKS!
Carol

Hello Carol

Ironically, I too live in Forest, VA. I have Oromandibular Dystonia. Unfortunately, I have been flying to Houston to get my botox injections so far, but it's early on in my condition and I have been working with one of the premier neuro's in the country at Baylor Med. Ctr. (Jankovic).

Once I get the right placement and dosage, I plan to switch to someone within driving distance. I have researched this and I think you can count on Norfolk, Duke University, and Johns Hopkins to name a few. None of them is "close" to Forest, but they are within 3-5 hours drive. Of course, with ADSD, you might be able to find someone closer. I know some neuros will inject Botox, but not for OMD, which is a highly specialized injection. Anyway, welcome to Forest.

Mike,

Thanks for the information. Do you have SD too? If so, do you have a speech language therapist that you work with?

Carol

I have OMD, not SD. Similar, but not exactly the same. I haved used a speech therapist in Lynchburg -- Scott Rankin.

Dear Carol,

I live near Richmond, Va and I've been getting botox since 1992. Dr David Cross gives most of the injections for people in our support group. I think he is very good. He injected me for 9 years. I went to Winston Salem for about 3 years - they have an excellent sucess rate and treat 25-30 patients at a time. I currently go to Dr Chang of Warrenton and get very good results from him. He gives injections most Fridays. I have heard there is a new MD at UVA who trained in NY. Hope this is helpful.

That is helpful. Do any of them inject through the front of the neck and use an EMG machine?

Everyone I have gone to does it through the neck with EMG. Dr Chang is a little different. He injects local through the neck to the vocal chords and injects local which makes you cough. Then within a few moments you are numb and he goes in and injects botox. Always before I had no numbing. At first I wasn't sure about Dr Chang's way but now I like that.

Someone asked me about Dr Cross and his sucess rate so I have sent an email out to survey his patients. He does most of the injections of our support group.
