Has anyone had any luck with a combination botox injections and speech therapy? I had botox injections on Dec. 15, and now my ENT, not the one who gave me botox, wants me to try speech therapy again. I just don't want to spend the time and effort if it is not going to do any good. I had speech therapy before botox, and it did absolutely no good. Any encourgement, anyone? |

If you've already had more than a few sessions of speech therapy I doubt any more are going to do you much good. There are only so many techniques, and I think as most of us know, SD generally doesn't respond to speech therapy. Sounds to me like your ENT doesn't quite get it (hope that doesn't sound too mean.) I will say, though, now that my botox treatment has most definitely reduced my effort to speak I do find that being conscious of taking a good breath thru my belly as opposed to my chest does make a difference. |

My doctors told me that speech therapy is beneficial for some and is not for others. I find the combination was helpful for me. My diagnosis is ADSD and muscular tension dysphonia. I began with speech therapy only and did improve, but not enough. BOTOX reduces or eliminates my spasms for a time. During that period, I am able to continue to work on eliminating the bad habits that I had formed to try to compensate for the spasms and irritated vocal chords due to laryngopharyngeal reflux. The techniques learned in speech therapy help me to get the best sound possible out of my voice when the spasms begin to return. |

The key is to find a speech therapists who has worked with SD before. I went to one speech therapist before I was diagnosed and she was virtually no help. After diagnosis, the Dr. sent me to a therapist who specialized in working with patients who had SD. It was a dramatic difference. No, it doesn't cure the SD, but the techniques and strategies I learned have made a huge difference in how I deal with it. Bryan

I was injected July 1, 2009 and began speech therapy in November. 11 months and 2 weeks after injections, I am scheduled for botox again. Therapy did not cure, but it certainly prolonged time between injections and I'm all for that! Therapy is a daily commitment but it is worth it. My therapist also included relaxation and breathing exercises along with speech techniques. |
