False Vocal Cords?

I have heard of "false vocal cords". What are they and how can you tell if you're using them, before you go to an ENT? I am thinking they are the membrane of the upper throat.

Since all of the useful information from this thread has been removed to never never land, I'll replace it. The false vocal cords serve as a protection mechanism which helps to prevent small particles of food etc. from entering the lungs. There would be a great amount of noticeable tension if you were using the false cords to produce sound as they don't possess the same degree of adductability as the the vocal cords.

Steph - I have had the surgery (denervation/reinervation of the laryngeal nerve) by Dr. Berke at UCLA. My surgery was in June of 2000. I was examined by Dr. Berke and his staff about 3 weeks ago. The camera showed that the false vocal "folds" were extending forward when I would speak and vibrated, making a low sounding voice. Apparently, they have involuntarily taken over the function of my vocal cords which are not yet working properly. I actually saw this on the monitor. The "folds" extended forward, covering my vocal cords from sight (by the camera) and two little fingertips protruded and would vibrate like crazy - making sound. So I gather the false vocal folds can do other things under certain circumstances. John
