hi all. i am a 16-year old in Oregon and i was just diagnosed with mixed spasmodic dysphonia a few weeks ago. about a year ago, my voice was getting progressively worse: faltering, running out of breath, etc. it kind of got me in trouble at school so this summer we went to OHSU. sixteen, male, mixed apparently=very uncommon. about three days ago i got my first botox shot (2 units on each side i think) for adductor, as i don't want to try the more difficult one yet. but i haven't lost my voice. in fact, it is almost normal, a little gravely, but no faltering/"hiccups." how many people don't experience what seems to be called a "breathy period?" also, i am a singer in a couple of choirs, and before, when the sd was affecting my speaking, i could easily sing fairly high for a guy. but now, after the shot and when i can speak fairly normally, i have lost pretty much my whole range (especially high), though it is much smoother. any singers out there who have experienced this. sorry for such a long post. thanks!!

Hi there,I experience the same thing. I don't get really breathy at all. I get a fairly low dose, so I don't get the side effects alot of people experience. It means I might have to get my botox more often, but I prefer it to dealing with the side effects. I used to be able to sing, but I had to make a choice. The ability to sing or the ability to speak. I can sing when my botox is wearing off, for a couple of weeks. But, I definitely don't have the singing voice I used to. As a singer, I cried many many days because singing was my emotional release. Now, I play an instrument. I had to find another creative outlet, but I enjoy it just as much as I did singing. PS, I had some symptoms in high school, but it wasn't frequent. I finally got diagnosed when I was 25. I'm 30 now. Lori B.

A breathy voice is only one of the signs that the botox is working. A gravelly or raspy voice can, also, be a sign that the botox has taken effect. Also, sometimes, it will take several days for the full effect of the botox to take effect...On your other observation...Many people lose their singing voice when they get botox. Singing and talking are done in different areas of the vocal cords, so while you could sing when your voice was "abnormal" with botox, alot of times it will make your voice "normal" and screw up your singing voice. Needless to say, botox is not a panacea;but it is definately better than dealing with SD...
