I have been advised to take voice therapy and would like to hear some of your opinions on whether it's worth the time and expense. I currently get botox injections about every three months. Thanks DL

As it was explained to me by my doctor, voice therapy in addition to BOTOX is beneficial to some patients. In my case, I gain benefit. I have a heavy muscular tension dysphonia element that accompanies my SD. Voice therapy helps me with this and also helps me to get the best voice possible from my SD voice (breathing techniques).

I want to ask you a question about my condition. I have had problems with my voice but I 've also had Social phobia also. I never have felt comfortable around people. This is my problem:When I speak to someone, my voicesounds tight and strangled, however I can then go into a room by myself and say the same sentence I just said to that person and sound perfectlyfine. It only sounds like SD when I am talking to someone but when I talk or read outloud to myself ,,my voice sounds totally normal. You mentioned you have Tense Muscle DY and I wondered what you were doing to help that condition and also could my "public" voice problem be psychological or aresult of being scared of people. thanks for your feedback

I too have had good luck with voice therapy. I have learned the breathing techniques and have been able to use the them to make my in-between shot times longer. (my longest time is 11 months) One thing I would do would be to check with your insurance company before you go to your appointments. I found that my insurance did not cover my voice therapy. We fought it but finally gave up, that being said, it was well worth digging into our own pockets for it. For me it is extremely important as I drive 550 miles one way to recieve my injections. I know that many of us with SD do go long distances, so anything we can do to help ourselves is wonderful.

Hi,

Voice therapy literally saved my teaching career. I have AB, and when I started having symptoms and difficulty with breaks in between consonants and vowels, I didn't have any coping strategies and so bad went to worse in a relatively short span of time. I had two excellent therapists who taught me many different speech/voice therapy techniques that helped me learn to work with the SD rather than trying to force my voice through it. Then, once I started getting botox treatments that worked, I stopped the therapy but find myself still relying on therapy techniques as I near the end of a benefit period. I would advise, if you decide to go with therapy, to make sure that you find therapists who know how to work with SD patients. It was my experience that not all therapists have worked with people who have SD and thus weren't really able to help me as much as I had hoped. Best of luck with it.

Keith

I had voice therapy for a short time and it seemed helpful, but nothing has helped my voice like botox. Like others here I travel far and its a great expense to get it, but in the long run its worth it to me. Can anyone share some of the breathing techniques there using to make the injections work longer? Thanks, butterfly

Hi. I am in speech therapy now,and one of the breathing exercises is to put your hand on your tummy and breathe in making your tummy poke out. Breathe out saying "whoooo" making your tummy tighten up. Another is to say "ha, ho, who, hi" as you breathe out. Putting the "h" sound before a word helps you to breathe out as you are saying the word.I hope this helps. Good luck.

I think it is only worth it if you can find someone with experience dealing with SD patients. I went for 4 months worth of sessions & found myself teaching the pathologist about SD! I didn't find it helpful but think the right person could make a difference.
