Has anyone heard of having your false vocal cords surgically removed due to dystonia impacting the true and false cords? momof2boys |

This sounds extremely suspect. They don't normally "remove" any of the vocal cords/folds. With dystonia, SD's impact is on the MUSCLES that control the vocal folds (be it the true or false vocal folds). Where did you hear about this? It sounds like something different than what you are describing might be more accurate. Some type of myectomy procedure, perhaps??? But "they" never remove true or false vocal folds/cords. That'd be the biggest disaster known to man. It could, instead, be some type of surgery targetted at the muscles that control them. That being said, being a guinea pig for a surgery that's unheard of and rarely (if ever) done isn't really in anyone's best interest given that it's permanent and could be catastrophic. Generally speaking, with the exception of some thyroplasty procedures, surgery is permanent. And even with thyroplasty or shim insertion or whatever, there is still permanent scar tissue, etc. so saying they are "reversible" is only partially true. That being an aside, with any surgery, if your results are poor, you're stuck with them forever. If they come up with better treatment for SD or a cure for SD, if you've had surgery, you won't benefit from this better treatment or cure in many cases. I realize sitting around with a severe voice disorder, not ammenable to treatment isn't always an option either, but letting surgeons experiment on what sounds like a "let's see what happens if" procedure just may not be in your best interest. Just my opinion! Perhaps you could clarify what this procedure entails and who suggested it. It might change my take on the situation. Laurie Modified by Laurie at Mon, Jun 22, 2009, 17:52:00 |

Hi Laurie, I made an appointment in July to discuss this operation with my doctor. I do respect my doctor and the medical facility at which he works as it is world renowned. The information I have received does say that the false cords would be removed, and I would still have to undergo Botox injections. I'll share information after I see him in late July. I'll also be traveling to UCLA for a consult for SLAD-R; I'm in the process of setting up that appointment. momof2boys
