Not Using Voice After Botox Shots

I had read a posting before my October Botox shots suggesting it worked better if you did not speak at all for 24 or 48 hours after the injections - and it did help. I can't remember now though if it was 24 or 48 hours. I get my next round of shots in the morning. Does anyone remember this post?

I have never heard this before. You have now had your injection, I am imagining. So would you report back your voice quality with the rest of us after one-two days? (How many injections have you had thus far?) Thank you for sharing this bit of info.

minutes/hours of voice rest - not days

There was one published study that compared the results of total vocal rest for 30 minutes versus lots of vocalization in the 30 minutes following Botox injection.

It would take me too long to find the study abstract so you'll just have to trust me!

The group that rested their voices for 30 minutes got better results from their injections.

HOWEVER, plenty of people go right to work and talk all day on the day of their injection and do just fine.

But if you want to try not talking for 30 minutes or an hour or two to let it sit in, I say why not? It certainly will not do any harm.

24 to 48 hours is definitely not necessary.

Good luck,
Laurie

Thank you for your replies. The total voice rest did help my voice come back much stronger and quicker last time - I don't know why but it made a definite difference. I'll let you know how it goes this time.

Hi, all:

Here's the study abstract which I've coped and pasted from the archives of our bulletin board from a discussion thread in 2004:

"Effect of neuromuscular activity on the response to botulinum toxin injections in spasmodic dysphonia.

Wong DL, Adams SG, Irish JC, Durkin LC, Hunt EJ, Charlton MP.

Department of Otolaryngology, Toronto Hospital, Ontario.

Spasmodic dysphonia (SD), a neurologic disorder characterized by involuntary vocal spasms during speech, has been effectively treated by injections of botulinum toxin (BT) into the laryngeal muscles. The aim of the present study was to determine if the therapeutic response to BT is enhanced by immediate and continuous activation of the injected muscles. Twenty SD patients were randomized into two groups following bilateral injections: vocal rest for 30 minutes and continuous vocalization for 30 minutes. Evaluations consisted of voice ratings by expert observers, acoustic measurements using computer analyses, and laryngeal aerodynamic measurements. The findings suggest that vocal rest, rather than vocalization, produces a superior and longer lasting response in SD patients receiving BT injections. It is recommended that SD patients refrain from post-injection vocalization to maximize the therapeutic effects of BT.

Publication Types:
Clinical Trial
Randomized Controlled Trial

PMID: 8551532 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]"

This study was about vocal rest for 30 minutes after Botox injections.

In the Botox diary which is distributed at our local Voice and Swallowing Center, it states that we should "reduce voice use for 48 hours for best results". Of course, there is a difference between total voice rest and reduced voice use.

Sincerely,
Mary Bifaro

Thanks Mary for the info. I will try that the next time I have a botox shot. Any news/info helps so much...

Well, since I'm getting a shot this Friday, I'm going to give it a try. No talking for several hours or at least maybe just a whisper. I've never given my vocal cords a break after my injections, and have always had varied results. Will let you know the difference. Funny thing is my neurologist recommends talking and feels you want to get the botox into the nerves, but I'll let him know ahead of time, no talking after.

And now for an update- I opted to not use my voice at all for 24 hours and then minimal use the next 24 hours. For me this does seem to help. My voice came back stronger and not as breathy. Haven't had as much trouble swallowing or choking. My children warn me before we go in somewhere though, not to do my dying cough( which occurs when I choke on a liquid) since it alarms people!Glad the swine flu scare is mostly past or I'd make people run! Dr. Garrett did back my dose down from the 2.5 as it was taking me a good 6 weeks to even be somewhat okay voicewise - which I realized was a little extreme thanks to reading the postings on this site! That also could have played a part in it being more bearable.I will add that Dr. Garrett was just at a convention where it was presented that it was better to use your voice 30 minutes after the injection - just to add to your deleima of deciding which path to take! Thanks to all of you who posted replies.

My doctor tells me that there is no "proven" evidence that vocal restriction after an injection yeilds a better result. Still, my best injection (comparing the same dosage) was one where I drove myself the six hour round trip. My worst was one where I drove with a friend that I had not seen for a while and we talked all the way up and all the way back. I plan to experiment more with this.
