Shelf Life Of Botox

It was explained to me a few weeks ago that the shelf life of a vial of BOTOX is not indefinite and reduced greatly after being opened for a period of time. My laryngologist tries to do most if not all of his patient's injections one day of each month in order to insure the potency of the BOTOX is at it's maximum for all and to also avoid wasting as much of the expensive drug as possible which I applaud him for. I am writing here wondering if maybe part of the reason that some ABSD/ADSD patients do not gain any benefit from their botox injections could be due to the use of "old" BOTOX by some doctors who are maybe more concerned about the bottom line of their practices rather than the best care for their SD patients. Any thoughts or info concerning this?

That's a very good point. I was surprised at our last support group meeting to learn that the shelf life is only 4 hours! I guess it would be good to ask anyone's doctor about this concern.

There are varying opinions on the shelf life of Botox. Many Otolaryngologists have a 'Botox Day' once per month to ensure they work only with a freshly made batch. Some doctors freeze Botox and reuse the opened bottle.

What I can tell you is that usually is not the reason for a poor Botox shot result.

For AD/SD people, a poor shot might well come from the needle missing the center of the target muscle. The needle may go into the very outer edge of the vocal cord muscle and that could end up with a poor result.

AB/SD patients are injected into different vocal cord muscles than AD/SD people. Some AB/SD people may not do well with Botox shots because the location of the target vocal muscle can be very difficult to reach. Also, the target vocal cord muscle is miniscule in size, making it even more challenging.

There can be other reasons for poor Botox results but I have given you the most common ones.

Yes, I have also read where the most common reason for poor results from Botox is difficulty with hitting the target muscle. I can't help but feel that some ENT's are more experienced and have a better "feel" for doing the injections than others. Hopefully this will change and more ENT's will be better able to consistantly treat all SD patients that require botox.
