stroke after Botox injection in Houston

On Jan. 26th,I had my third Botox injection within 2years and that night got a terrible headache. The next day I lost my memory, couldn't read, couldn't answer questions, etc. and after a MRI and CT Scan,a blood clot and bleed was found in my left temporal area(speech center). Spent a week in the hospitol there, returned to Alaska and had the same stroke take place in Feb. Now I have acute headaches and the dr's up here really don't have any answers for me. Does anyone think a blood clot could have traveled from my throat strait up to my temple? Of course the dr. denied that possibility but he used two injections, the first he said he pulled out w/o injectiong the Botox. Would like anyone's thoughts. I am fifty years old and never had any medical problems before...I don't plan on any more Botox injections altho they worked well for me!

I have no idea about the blood clot per se, but I have had the EnT pul out the needle and then go back in to get in the right spot without any problems. There was not any real bleeding though, so you may have had some. It is such a coincidence and no wonder you feel there may have been a connection. I am not a doctor but would not have thought it possible for a clot to take that path in that time, but you never know. My instince, and this is only opinion, would be that it was not the injection. If there was a bleed in the area itself the clot would have been more likely to have been a result of that, not a slight bleed in the throat area.

Hi Jane,

I'm so sorry to hear about your stroke. It sounds like an unfortunate coincidence. A blood clot from your throat could not go directly to your brain, unless the doctor hit the carotid artery. If you hit the carotid artery with a needle, you would know it, because it would bleed like crazy. A blood clot in your throat would more likely be in a vein rather than an artery. From there, it would go to the right side of your heart, and then to your lungs, not to your brain. Hope this helps. -- Ed
