Spasmodic Dysphonia and eye muscle spasms

I've started a mini support group of two in Anchorage, Alaska. I've had several BoTox injections for my adductor spasmodic dysphonia. I always traveled to Seattle for my treatment at University of WA with Dr. Hillel. A woman who I am meeting with recently had a botox injection here in Anchorage. She has abductor spasmodic dysphonia. She is very upset with the injection.... lots of discomfort and still no voice two weeks later. She is also suffering from eye spasms. Her doctor is suggesting BoTox for the eye lid muscles. I'm going with her at her next appt. Any suggestions on information? Does anyone have experience with spasmodic dysphonia and eye spasms?

Thanks so much,
Julie

Dear Julie:

At the bottom of Page One of this forum, there are links to the Dystonia and Blepharospasm bulletin boards.

I did a search of the archives of our bulletin board. In 2004, there was a post by one of our members on the issue of having more than one focal dystonia. This member's doctor indicated that a person with SD has about a 10% to 15% lifetime risk of developing another focal dystonia. This is most likely something in the head or neck such as blepharospasm, meige's syndrome, or cervical dystonia.

In Karen Adler Feeley's new book, "Easier Done than Said: Living with a Broken Voice", there are survey results on Page 158. Of the 758 respondents, 14.6% of them indicated that they have other forms of dystonia in addition to SD.

I applaud your efforts in starting a mini support group in Anchorage, Alaska. Should this grow into the formation of an SD support group, the NSDA has the printed resources, leadership volunteers and staff to assist you.

Sincerely,
Mary Bifaro
Abductor SD since 1987
Charlotte, NC

Hi Julie

I'm not sure if this is similar to what your friend has however I have SD and when my voice is bad and 'cuts out' from the effort of speaking I find myself involuntarily blinking... sometimes the blinking is quite harsh - almost like a flinch. This however only occurs when my botox injections are running out...

Hi!!I have SD and my sister has blephraspasms. She gets botox injections in her eye lids. Her eye doctor said we most likely got these from our mother. Our mom had blep. spasms for a while, but it stopped, on its own. My sister's Dr. was hoping that hers would also, but he said, at this point he does not believe they will.
