Just read where anxiety meds can aggravate dystonias. Since SD is a form of dystonia, is the ativan I take regularly making me worse? Thanks for any input.

Sometimes patients are prescribed benzodiazepine type medications like Valium, Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan, etc. to help relax and relieve anxiety. Many people with SD have reported that when they are stressed out or especially anxious, their voices are usually worse.

I've tried most of these medications and while they've never really helped my voice, they also haven't ever made it any worse. The Valium did help the muscle spasms though. However, I've also heard and met others with SD who have gotten much better voices while using these type of medications, so it's really different with everyone.

The only medication that has ever made my voice much better is the sleeping aid Ambien. My doctor thinks it blunts the central nervous system response to vocal chord function. I've heard from others on this bulletin board who tried it and some it helped and some it didn't.

If you search the archives, you'll find a lot of information about different types of medications that have helped or not helped. Keep in mind though that what works for one person may not help another person at all, and if something does work, it ay not keep working. It's very confusing and frustrating.

Good luck!

I have AB/SD. I haven't been receiving treatment in the past 20 years. I gave up after receiving a series of BOTOX injections that really didn't help much and were difficult to get (travel, expense, disappointment). I never heard of taking Ambien to help with AB/SD. Do you have any other suggestions? Most of what I have read is in regard to AD/SD. Are there any sites that focus on AB/SD?

Around the time I was diagnosed with SD they put me on Zoloft. It made my SD considerably worse to the point I couldn't be understood. I won't go near anti-anxiety meds now. Hope that helps. Amelia

Zoloft (Sertraline hydrochloride) is an antidepressant of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class. Ativan (Lorazepam) is a benzodiazepine tranquilizer.

Just to clarify, my comments were specifically about the benzodiazepine type drugs.

And on top of that I didn't even need the meds as I was not depressed at all and the only thing causing me anxiety was my voice disorder! All I know is Zoloft really did a number on my voice. I am glad to hear not all meds affecting the brain do that.

I had Lasik eye surgery a while back, and prior to the surgery they gave me Valium to relax. last year I had a Colonoscopy with another dose of Valium. I do remember my voice was very smooth and not strained in both treatments, but I could have been so focused on my surgery and exam that it would have been smooth anyway. The problem is, if it was the Valium making my voice smooth in that state, I would never be able to function through my daily life. But I would be one happy camper!

Raymond,

They probably gave you a fairly large dose since it was in preparation for a medical procedure. You could try taking a lower dose, like over a weekend, to see if it really does help.

I have been taking klonopin .25 mgs three times a day for over a year and it has helped my voice tremendously. Klonopin is in the same family of medications as Ativan. The dosage I take is very low and seems to relax the spasms in my throat. Also I do vocal exercises every morning and try to sing during the day to keep my voice working and relaxed. Today I was talking to my mother and asked her what she thought of my voice and she said she couldn't hear any shaking in it and that it sounded normal.
