Has anyone gotten an injection from a bad batch of botox??

Hi,

I've heard recently of people receiving injections from botox that is biologically inactive, thereby not yielding any benefit. Has anyone experienced this? I recently got a shot and have not thus far, one week later, experienced either any side effects or improvement in voice. I'm hoping it's just taking longer than usual, but I'm becoming doubtful of this.

Hi, Keith,

There are a couple possibilities. I sometimes think the "bad batch" of botox is more hype than anything else. One way to figure that out would be to call your MD and see if everyone else using that vial also didn't get results. If others got results, the Botox was fine. It is theoretically possible for the Botox to become denatured during reconstitution (if it's shook too hard) but extremely rare.

More than likely, the Botox missed the muscle, leaked out, etc. This does happen on occasion, unfortunately.

I'd recommend calling the MD and going back for a follow-up. Last time I had an injection that didn't work, I returned the following week and got one that did!

I also agree w/ you that if it hasn't worked at one week, it's not going to. I think I recall you have AB/SD so I can't relate 100% on that note as I know the "setting in" period is somewhat different, but I know for myself if it hasn't worked in 3-4 days, I can be assured it will not.

Good luck.

Laurie

Hi Keith,

The injection probably just missed the "sweet spot". Even with EMG guidance, sometimes the injection can hit the outside edge of the muscle and that won't do you any good. Since this isn't uncommon, most doctors will usually re-do the injection at no additional cost if you let them know within a week or two.

Although they may not be willing to share such information, you could ask your doctor if anyone else reported poor results from the same batch. Another consideration is that they may have let the Botox sit around too long between patients. Botulinum toxin type A (Botox) requires reconstitution with saline, and once it's in liquid form, it has an extremely short shelf life.

For the rare patients who may have developed resistance to Botulinum toxin type A, or Botox, the Food and Drug Administration approved Myobloc, the type B form of Botulinum toxin. Myobloc is much more convenient to use than Botox. It is formulated as a ready-to-use liquid and packaged in vials; the product is stable and has a long shelf life.

Let us know if the doctor redoes your injection and what the results are. Good luck.
