I have found that after giving up caffeine and chocolate and caffeintated soda's that it has improved my voice allot and also breathing exercises help too. I also noticed that sometimes whenever I take certain vitamins that my voice is worse. I don't know if they get lodged or what. So what I am saying is to seek out ways to get yourself better. I never had any luck with Botox so I was the first one with AB/SD to have surgery with Dr.Burke. My voice was better for 3 years and then went downhill somewhat so these are the things that I believe have helped me..

Hi Colleen,
Thanks for this posting. I have thought about cutting back or even trying to eliminate caffeine to see if it would improve my strained/strangled voice. It will be tough though, I crave my coffee and special dark chocolates! I also have a high sugar intake that I'm sure doesn't help either. After reading about your improvement I just might do it. How long after you quit caffeine did you notice a change? I'm sure it will take a few days for the caffeine to clear the system.

My speech therapist gave me a list of things to do when I first started working with her. One of them was to eliminate caffeine. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be and it did help my voice and lessen the tightness. It's not a cure, but it did help. I noticed the difference within a week. If I have a caffeinated drink now, I can feel the tightness in my throat and my voice is weaker.

There are lots of decaffeinated options. Starbucks has very good decaffeinated coffee and also lots of decaffeinated teas. I love their green tea – and it’s good for you too!

Hi all,
I think that there really might be something to this caffeine. I used to drink(and eat) anywhere up to seven to eight caffeines a day and I have cut back to three. I read somewhere on the internet that excess caffeine can really cause all kinds of problems. I love Starbuck's, but I now limit myself to no more than one a day. I really think that there might be something with the caffeine that can cause problems with your voice(and other things.)

I saw the Loyola doc yesterday to whom I was referred. She is not a doc but is speech therapist. Her official designation is CCC-SLP (Certificate of Clinical Competency-Speech-Language Pathology). Anyway, she wants to see me twice a week for a minimum of 6 weeks. She thinks I have MTD but maybe MTD with some SD as well. So yesterday, on my first visit, she recorded my voice while saying the long "eeeeee" which is very constrained sounding for me. Also, she had me read a paragraph as she recorded me. I guess this will be the baseline to which compare my progress. She gave me a list of things to do and not do. Clearing my throat, something which I do constantly, out of what may have been more of a habit tnan need, although I can feel the phlegm as I clear it. Also, I am to avoid coffee (the list said ceffeinated coffee but she wants me to avoid all coffee since it is acidic) and soft drinks and any citrus drink. Anything acidic or spicey that could be irritating I am to avoid. Also I am to continue the pantoprazole, a proton pump inhibitor, twice a day for GERD. I was hoping for more of a "quick fix" (yeah riiiiight!!!...aren't we all) but I am willing to do anything to get my voice back. She said this voice is engrained in me so it will not be easy trying to speak in a "new" voice. I'll report my progress here. Thanks to all of you who comment here. It certainly helps to know you're not alone and have a level of support.

I haven't seen any studies that show a link between SD and coffee drinking/caffeine consumption.

I did however see recently from WeMove a summary of research into possible links between caffeine consumption and Parkinson's Disease, which like SD is another neurological movement disorder. This seems to say that the is a protective effect:

############################################################

Quoting from WeMove:

What were the results of the study?

Both men and women who drank at least one cup of coffee every day had a lower risk of developing PD, as compared with people who did not drink coffee. Those who drank five or more cups a day had the lowest risk. Women who drank three or more cups of tea a day also had a lower risk, but those who drank only one or two cups did not have a lower risk than those who did not drink tea. There was no connection between drinking tea and PD in men.

What were the authors' conclusions?

"The biological mechanism behind the association of coffee consumption and PD risk is thus far not clear; however, the caffeine content of coffee is the most possible suggestion from previous investigations. The protective effect of caffeine should be investigated within total caffeine intake in future studies."

I'm with you, Marla, at least in theory!

I pretty much never consumed caffeine from before I was diagnosed with SD until about six months ago. I started drinking it again lately and it certainly hasn't caused any problems.

We can all go insane on these elimination diets only to realize it's not really going to help the voice.

I say, eat healthy and do what you like but if you think you will try to cure or even help the symptoms SD with diet or lifestyle changes, be very high with your standards so you are not depriving yourself of [whatever it may be] for no good reason. You may find yourself that after the initial "high" of swearing one's voice is better and doing something "good" wears off, at the end of the day, it's a sweet idea but doesn't change much.

I say if it works do it, as long as its safe. What is good for one person may not be good for another.
Not only that we have different degrees of SD, so I believe you can pinpoint that one thing is right or wrong for any given person.
We can only take the information and decide to try it and see if it helps or not.
Caffeine doesnt make a difference to me.
Allergy meds helps me out. Delsym helped me out. Speech therapy helped me out. And positive thinking helped me out. Botox has helped me out too.
If I had to choose one of the above that helps me the most I would say its positive thinking.......because without it you cant move past what is happening as easily. Even with botox, you have to be positive, to get through the procedure and side effects.
Keep plugging everyone!!
Happy New Year ( your not alone in this ) email me anytime.
