There has been a lot of discussion about Delsym and Dextromethorphan, which is the active ingredient in many cough syrups, including Delsym. When searching for information using the "Find" feature, be sure to check the box for "Search in message body." If this is not checked, then only the discussion thread headline and author are used in the search. Most recently, there has been information about Delsym and Dextromethorphan on page one under "Drugs, please elaborate" and on page two under "Over the counter or prescribed medication for SD." There is much more in the archives. Most people who have reported improvement with Dextromethorphan have said that it takes a few days of use to get the full effect, if any. Good luck! Lori

While this posting does not directly answer your question, it does point out that serious medical research is taking place in one of the main ingredients Delsym, specifically Dextromethorpham. Here is some related information copied from the NIH web site. There was a lot of information about tremor that I left out: "The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a unit of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the nation’s leading federal funder of research on disorders of the brain and nervous system. An additional NINDS study will examine how dextromethorphan, a drug that alters reflexes of the larynx (voice box), might reduce voice symptoms in people with voice disorders, including vocal tremor. This study will compare the effects of dextromethorphan, lorazepam (a tranquilizer), and a placebo in patients with four types of voice disorders."

I read many postings back about 6 mos? ago about people who where trying Delsym. A few people stated it worked well for them, so I decided to give it a try after my Botox injection was wearing off. I gave it a few days with no improvement at all.
So far for me, Botox injections are the only thing that has temporarily put my voice back to normal.
Good luck,

Thank you for your comments and informative posts. It refreshed my memory of some previous posts. This is day 5 taking Delsym. I and others around me have noticed positive results. Voice is not 100% but has more volume and clarity. Hope it lasts and don't become a "junkie"! Thought about trying wine with it for 100% possibly, but afraid it may just make me drunk!! All of you on this bulletin board are such a blessing, dealing with this problem and sharing information to help others. Thanks again.

That's great it is giving you positive results. The fear of getting addicted to it would worry me too.
I seem to be one of very few that dosen't get good results from alcohol. In fact it makes my voice at it's worst, especially dry red wine. It feels like my vocal cords just tighten right up making my already strangled voice more strangled sounding. This is a real bummer because I like to ocasionaly have a drink or two with friends and family.
Keep us posted

I'm so glad to hear that others are benefiting from the Delsym. I've been taking it for over a year now with great results. I only take one dose a day and that seems to be enough. I wouldn't worry about getting addicted to it as long as you stay within the recommended dosages. My doctor said that people who have problems with it are taking much, much higher amounts than are recommended. Also, while on vacation this summer I forgot to take it for several days and did not even realize it until my voice began to deteriorate. Hope it continues to help!!!! Nancy

WOW Nancy that's great! How long after you stopped taking it did you realize your voice began to deteriorate? And then when you started it again your voice was good? How much do you take? Sorry to hear some of you got sick from it!! And you take it every day? Has your doctor expressed any concern about addiction AND, do you get botox or are just taking Delsym? You can write me off the board if you'd like, but I'd also like others to see your response. :) Thank you! just for everyones info: I started taking Delsym last week {2 tsp once in the morning} I took it for 5 days and no voice results at all- but worse I was terribly sick to my stomach the whole time. I wrote ant told the manufacturer and they were uncerncerned. thinking I got a bad batch I offered to send it back/ requested a refund- and they said they dont refund. so I would say to be wary of the Delsym treatment. incidently, when I stopped taking it I felt fine again.

Hi, Betty,That's not surprising at all. I tried dextromethorphan twice for a cough (its intended use) and it made me quite sick to my stomach as well. It's one of the potential side effects. In any case, anytime I took it for a cough, it never did the slightest thing for my voice. Personally, I don't buy the idea that it's a potential treatment for SD. Laurie

Sorry about your problems with Delsym. Just for the record, my voice regressed back to the crappy stage on or about the 6th day. Only took 2 tsp. each morn. Did not have any side effects other than dry throat. Think the only "fix" (temporary) for us AD/SD'rs is Botox, but refuse to go through the expense/hassle again. Has anyone heard of any results from NIH Study on dextromethorphan?
