Side effects...Build up

Since botoxin is known to block the release of acetylcholine at the specific site of injection, is it possible that botoxin could effect the release of acetylcholine at a different site in the body?
I receive the botox injection in the vocal cords. As of late, I have been experiencing problems connected to the kidney and adrenal glands. Is the blockage of acetylcholine in this area possible?
Where does the botoxin go after it is "used" at the site of injection? Is there an area in the body where it could essentially "build up" and have adverse effects at a location other than the site of injection... like the kidneys or renal glands? Joleen

Hi Joleen,
The botox A given for SD into the vocal cord muscles is a miniscule amount compared to that for the neck muscles for spasmodic torticollis, eg normally anywhere between 1 unit to 10 units for SD as opposed to up to 400 units or so for ST. As far as I know, this botox remains localized to the injection site in SD and does not transfuse to other body areas. so I think it is unlikely that it has spread to the kidney and adrenal glands. The botox does block release of acteylcholine from the nerves to the muscles at the specific site of injection. Over time the "potency" of this small amount of botox will wear off and the nerve endings re-sprout and re-attach to the muscles resulting in return of spasms.

Lloyd, Thank you for your response. Does Botox break down at the side of injection or is it carried to the outside of the body? If carried out of the body it seems as if it would have to go through the kidney... Still it doesn't seem like either process could actually make a significant dif. to the kidneys.

Joleen,
I'm not a doctor so I can't say 100% exactly where it goes. My assumption has been that it breaks down at the injection site. It is diluted down to miniscule quantities such that I have not heard or read anywhere in the medical literature of it ever causing a toxic build-up or problem at the kidney end.
Maybe some of our medical community "browsers" might like to step in here and address this issue.

Lloyd, Joleen and whoever else,

I'm not a medical-community person either...just a patient. But, with my research and a recent experience I had, spending extended-time with a rep for one pharmaceutical company (Elan Pharmaceuticals: producer of MYOBLOC, otherwise known as "botulinum toxin-type B"), they SAY that it is very localized at the site of injection as Botox is supposed to be also. Even though A and B work different in the body. In other words...they claim no build-up and no leaking into the system. Sounds like what Lloyd is describing.

As Lloyd says, I'm also very interested in seeing medical professionals post on this issue so we can all learn. The sales rep I met with was very knowledgable but we all know that sales folks vs. real-research and real-histories can be different things. This subject fascinates me so I hope to learn from others' postings on it.
