I have been asked to participate in an NIH study. I am not fond of being poked and prodded and have, thus far, avoided Botox because of that. Has anyone ever had a Nasolaryngoscopy? What can I expect?

Greetings from AZ,

This is just one of the text info from the web about; Nasolaryngoscopy
Check out more through your browser.

'Flexible Nasolaryngoscopy is an examination of your nose, voicebox and upper respiratory tract. During the procedure, a small, flexible, fiberoptic scope (about half the width of a pencil) is inserted into one side of the nose, permitting your doctor to see the curves and small spaces of your nose and larynx. Most people find the procedure to be very tolerable. Your doctor will use numbing medicine to make you as comfortable as possible.'

I have had this exam many times, if the Dr. is knowledgeable, it is not difficult.
NIH is very active in helping SD patients. I have been there, They are great!

Dear smsprauer,
I had this done over 10 years ago and perhaps they've improved since. It wasn't painful, but I found it unpleasant. (the numbing spray in particular) Had I known ahead of time that it was unpleasant, I would have been more prepared.
I too am avoiding Botox, but it is because it seems like such a roller coaster ride (maybe it works, maybe it doesn't...maybe you'll whisper for weeks, or have trouble swallowing....or maybe it'll be great...)
I do think studies on SD are worth participating in. Perhaps you'd feel better with one that did not involve nasolaryngoscopy.

I hate being poked and prodded as well but I have had that procedure done to diagnose my SD. I've heard that they use numbing medication but my doctor went in cold and it still wasn't that bad. Good luck!

I've had this done at least ten times over the past 4 years and I've never had any problem at all. One of the first times was a little uncomfortable until we discovered that I had a deviated septum. After that, I always tell the doctor which side to use and I don't have any problems at all.

You should go for it! The more that is learned about SD, the closer we get to a cure or better treatment options.
