Hi
I just have been diagnosed spasmodic dysphonia (last january). 12 days ago I had my first botox. I think I got only 0,1. Don't know uni or bilateral, i will ask my doctor next time. I also forgot to ask which form I have but I think ADSD. The day after the injection the breathiness started for three days, finally I got my voice back and I spoke without spasms, even in a busy surrounding. After those days my voice weakened and got hoarse? Is this normal. I can conversate normally in a quiet environment, in the pub it is impossible to create enough power so people can understand me. I am curious if anyone has experience with that and how long this period takes with them. Finally my sneezes sound like a mouse (I am a 29 year old men!)

Hi, there,

Welcome to the BB. It sounds like you have AD/SD from your message, but of course your MD could confirm that for you. Breathiness usually kicks in for the first week or so, then it might stay breathy or hoarse for another few days or another week or two or even three. It all depends on the dose and your reaction to it.

If your voice is still quiet (though relatively normal in quiet places), just rest assured that you still might be a little weak from the Botox and that will improve soon. It's hard to say exactly how long without hearing you and without knowing a longer injection reaction history, but one thing for sure is that it will get stronger so you should end up with a good result in the end with that stronger voice you initially had (a few days after the injection). Your experience does sound relatively normal. Things often get more stable after several injections.

Can't help you on the sneezing issue! I do know coughs sometimes sound odd, and that could be a similar concept. They all take vocalization, or at least involve the vocal folds, in a way.

I know what it's like to have SD when you're young, as I am but one year older than you. It takes a while to adjust.

Welcome to the BB,
Laurie (NYC)

Hi Mark,
I had my first botox injection on Jan 10 and my voice came back hoarse. I saw my ENT last week. He said this is not a normal response to botox but its what I'm going to have until the botox wears off and they can try a different dose. He said speech therapy might help if you see someone trained in SD. And my sneezes sounded funny at first too but that part is back to normal now. I guess its all trial and error until they find the right dose. Hopefully your hoarseness will clear up to a strong voice. Good luck, Katie

Hi Katie,

Thanks for your reply, I will have a consult by phone with my doctor next week. How about the strength of your voice? Did you also suffered from a weak voice after the botox. In normal conditions I can talk easily, when I visit the pub with friends it is very difficult to talk loud enough, like my voice lacks power and there is much less volume then before.

Mark

My voice is fairly strong, just hoarse. People say it sounds like it hurts me to talk, but it doesn't usually. If I talk too much my throat get sore. I usually tell people its more painful for them to listen to me than it is for me to talk. I think you have to keep a sense of humor, it could alway be worse. At first no one could hear me in loud places, I would write notes on napkins to stay in the conversation. Now I can talk. My first sentence or two are okay, than the hoarseness sets in. I'm just waiting for the next try of botox. I have to call my doctor in 3 weeks so he can hear my voice again.
Take care
Katie

Humor is what kept en keeps me going. I am so relieved that I can talk smoothly again. The hoarseness and the weak voice are less worse then the spasms. I am just not a very patient person, everything is new for me.

Always look on the bright side of life....what doesn't kill you makes you stronger is my opinion. Stay positive, it won't help your SD if you sob, be negative and feel sorry for yourself!!
